Yaris has trouble starting sometimes, not all the time.

Hey all,

I have a 2009 5 speed hatchback. I'm trying to diagnose the problem I'm having with it. Every once in awhile it will have trouble starting. Most of the time it starts completely fine, but every once in awhile it will take a bit longer to start. Engine turns over fine and everything when it does take longer, it just doesn't start right away.

This doesn't happen after it's been sitting overnight or anything like that. I'll drive it somewhere, make a short stop, and then it'll do its thing where it doesn't start right away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've had this "issue" maybe once a month back when I still had my 1nz. I chalked it up to the position the motor stopped in when I last turned it off. It never caused a problem and was rare. Just seemed to need to turn over a bit extra sort of as if the timing was off briefly.

I've never noticed this with my 2zr. I wouldn't worry about it.

Put some parameters around 'a bit longer'. If it's like an extra second or so, then normal. If you're cranking for an extra 5 seconds, then not necessarily normal.

Mine does this too. Weird slight extented crank and its inconsistent but it seems to happen more when its cooler or sat.

Began not long ago. Usually I clean the maf and TB every 15k but I had skipped out on tbe last cleaning. I cleaned them last week with no discernable difference.

Starting to get semi concerned. Wondering if the fuel pump is getting weak? Plugs look ok they only have 65k on them. Car has over 130k.

Thanks for the input everyone!

@WeeYari yeah the extra start time would be around 4-5 seconds.

It always starts up, I've never had to stop and try again. It just doesn't seem normal that it does that every once in awhile.

I would check things like the maf sensor if it needs cleaning, throttle body, pcv valve. Also spark plugs
