Charcoal Air Filter

Hey guys, after looking at the stock airbox (and doing some research online), I notice there is a charcoal filter on the top of where the drop-in filter goes. Does anyone know if this ever has to be replaced? Is it possible to delete this filter and get a performance, and/or MPG gain without engine damage?

It's meant to last the lifetime of the vehicle, and its purpose is to neutralize any fuel vapors that would otherwise waft up out of the intake system and into the atmosphere. Removing it has lots of potential legal consequences, but there is no risk of damage that I am aware of that results from removal. Several forum members have reported removing theirs, but the performance gains are largely anecdotal. I.e. nobody has posted a dyno pull with the only mod being the charcoal filter removed.

As with all things internet, take the advice you get here with a grain of salt and decide for yourself if you're OK with proceeding.
