That 70 to 85 is a killer! You go much over 70 and it goes down very quickly, 85??! forget about it. I'd be surprised if your getting 30mpg at 85. More likely mid 20's. Its a 1.5 litre motor......One of the guys I work with has a newer Harley that has a 1.8 LOL At those speeds it cannot fight aerodynamics with a motor that size, and geared the way it is. Not what it was designed for. Keep it at 70 or below and allow yourself a few extra minutes travel time. Keep your mindset that the tach never goes over 3000 rpm when shifting or cruising.....

That comparison I used with the Harley? My vehicle weights well over twice what his does and he doesnt get much better mileage than I do......

Also, what are your tire pressures?

Best I can get on my brand new 2012 with an napa gold filter and chevron is about 36 mpg per tank @ 80% highway between 70 and 85 mph.

BTW,what is the elevation of the range you drive?
I'm at 14 above sea level; i'm guessing that's why some of you are in the 40's, the air is thinner in OR an WY and the adirondacks...

Anything to get up the MPG's, boy. I'm actually thinking of putting some motorcycle tires on my rear to minimize drag.
Thanks in advance,
You have a point about the altitude. It's the same reason the big jets fly high, thinner air means less drag. Sure the engine makes less power, but so what. I'm at 4500 to 5500, 100 % 0f my local driving, mid 40's everytime but I drive slow, and got a stripped down rig. I could hit 50 I think but for me more trouble then it's may be worth as in time spent.

Aha....no wonder KentSzabo has a relatively easy time getting the fuel economy he does.

How accurate is the mpg gauge vs. real mpg on the 2012 Yaries?

The overall average for my 2012 has been 37.5 mpg which is pitiful compared to what some of you guys are getting, but I hit my personal best of 38.9 mpg on the first fillup with the new intake manifold.

Just did a fill and well nothing spectacular. I got 648 KM and 35.919 litres.

Which is 5.5 L/100 KM ... or 42.76 MPG. This is probably 85% city driving .. and the rest highway. This is very close to my last 3 fills .. which are around 5.4 to 5.6 L/100 KM. So .. very consistent.

I have switched from Shell gasoline (which seems to give me not so hot gas mileage). I am now going to use Esso gasoline and see how that works for me. (ExxonMobil I believe for those in the US).

Anyone have any comments on Esso / Exxon gas ? Is it a good choice ?

I think that is a great average you are getting, especially for city driving...

Thanks ... I try. But I am just learning ... I am by far not an expert hypermiler.
I try to remember to use DFSO (like when coming up to a red light .. ), but I don't always remember so I think that there is room for improvement.

In the 2012 Yaris, any thoughts on how accurate the average MPG computer is vs. actual calculations? Thanks.

I would think that it is as accurate as a ScanGauge or similar device as I would think that it would use OBDII data as well. But I don't have a 2012, though I cannot see any other method it could possibly use to calculate this figure. I have seen similar readouts in other Toyota cars .. such as the Prius and Venza though they seem to display such things as L/100 KM (Canadian model) and distance to empty.

the distance to empty is conservative from what i can tell... it actually reads a lot lower than how many miles you can actually go - yes, i tried lol. as for the mpg readings, i would hope they're accurate?

I've run two tanks through the 2012 Yaris L 5M. I'm driving quite carefully and using DFCO a lot. Most of my driving is about 35-45mph, with not much stop and go. First tank was 44.83 mpg and second was 47.12 mpg.

Doing pretty well. If you want more, I think you're only options (for driving technique) would be kicking in DFCO much sooner than you already are or using FAS.
