Actual Spare Wheel - question

Am thinking of putting in an actual space saver spare wheel, instead of the puncture kit that came with the hybrid.

Thing is, am only finding space saver 14inch ones, whilst mine come with 15inchers. Is it a No-Go, should I still get a 14inch stepney?

Thanks for your feedback.

Doesn't matter what the OE actual wheel sizing is, the space savers are always smaller. 14" is what you want.

We must be different here "down under". Our space saver spare is a 16x4 wheel with a 125/70x16 tyre. it's recommended inflation pressure is 60 PSI.

That's what we get as a spare. It's a "space saver" - 16x4 rim with a 125/70x16 tyre.

The base model has the 2NZ-FE and until recently had 14 inch wheels with 175/70x14 tyres, and the upmarket models have the 1NZ-FE wrih 15 inch wheels and 175/65x15 tyres. Both get the same size spare, which is marked as being speed limited to 80 km/h (50mph).

The spare is recommended to only be used on the rear, so if you get a flat front, vyou are supposed to swap a rear tyre to the front, and put the spare on the back.

Then if I'm understanding you guys well, 14" can still be fitted on 15", and as you're saying, in a smart approach, said space save wheel should ideally be fitted on the rear ones only, seeing ours are FWD.

Yes, but....

The narrow space saver will have less grip. This could be aproblem on the driving wheels. The differnece in diameter can also affect the anti lock brakes It's basically an emergency measure to get you to the nearest tyre shop.

space saver spare tire

2007 manual lists 14 and 15 inch stock tire sizes...only one size skinny spare.

It doesn't matter what size a spare tire is, as long as it fits over the brakes it'll work.

And it's never recommended to have a space saver temporary spare tire on the front as those tires are used for most of your stopping grip and steering.

And i think a 14" wonīt fit if you have disc brakes at the rear end.
Because you cant use 14" normal rims with rear disc brakes, this is because the rear disc has a bigger diameter than the front end discīs.
And all hybrids have rear disc brakes son dont bet on a 14" spare wheel

Now I have to check mine when I get a chance. I could have sworn my factory donut is on a tiny 14" wheel.

My apologies in advance if I was mistaken.

The spare on my 2009 is a Toyo T125/70D15, which seems like a pretty common size for space-savers.

Well, just to be different!
My factory tyres are 15" and my spacesaver is 16".
It's actually on the car at the moment, I'm having a new tyre fitted but the place who were fitting it damaged the alloy wheel.
Fortunatly the car is not needed until today, when the wheel should be repaired, by them at no cost.
At least they admitted to damaging the wheel before I noticed - a slight gouge in one of the spokes.

larger space saver spare

That is very interesting. I noted extra space around the skinny spare...why not have something with the same rolling diameter as the service tires? (And put spare on rear of these front heavy cars...save motion in the differential.)

Just out of curiosity, when refitting the "proper" wheel and new tyre, I measured the overall diameter of the 16" spacesaver and the 15" o.e.m. wheel and tyre.
Both are 23.5". So exactly the same rolling diameter for both.

You were so right mate. Thanks to you i saved some $$. I just headed downtown to meet a guy that had a spare toyota space saver 14", and i was without the yaris for the past couple of days so I couldnt try fitting it..even though the guy kept saying it should fit as it fits all toyotas....finally i got the car, met up, tried fitting it and disc brake just doesnt let you. The caliper get s in the way.

Concluaion, either full size toyota wheel. Mine's 15" but i dont think its easy to aource locally just one..or try a 15/16" spacesaver maybe that'll fit.

Thanks again man for the heada up as at timea i suspected the guy might sell it and was thi kig to myswlf let me just go buy it it should fit.
