39 MPG!!!

Bought me a used '07 Yaris. Read a bit on the forums on how to maintain best fuel efficiency. I was surprised after filling up the tank tonight that I got 39MPG. Over half the tank was driven by a relative who had to run all over the state. She's a speeder and she was blowing A/C full blast the entire time.

I'm curious to see if I'll be able to break 40MPG when I'm the only one driving it this next tank full.

I didn't do anything crazy to maximize fuel efficiency. I turn the fan on, but not the A/C. And for those days when I need some A/C just to keep me from breaking a sweat, I'll turn it on, then back off again .

I never exceed 55MPH regardless of the posted speed limit. I thought this would have been a nuisance to other drivers, but they just roll around me like it's nothing.

I do my best to not hit my brakes unless I need to. I coast when possible by leaving my car in gear and completely releasing off the throttle.

I never go into third gear until the green coolant light turns off.

And I'll do my best to lightly accelerate.

That's really it. I know there are more advanced tricks, but really I just want to roll with something that's practical. I don't need to turn off my car to coast or anything like that. To me that just seems to be more stress on the starter than need be. Furthermore, something tells me it's just safer to keep the engine running.

I plan to install a tach soon as I want to better monitor my shifting. And I need to start looking at my tire's pressure. I've had the car for two weeks and haven't checked once yet. I'm sure that's something that should at least be checked on a weekly basis.

Anywho... I'm enjoying my new purchase.

Happy Driving!

Welcome from another fellow Wisconsinite!

I tend to forget to check my tire pressure regularly, too. The best mileage I
got was one hot summer day, going down to the Chicago area. I had the
A/C full blast, but was only doing 45 mph in the construction zone going into
the tollway. Needless to say, there was nearly everyone passing me, and
I'm sure I ticked off some even though I was in the right lane. Hey, I don't
want a double ticket in the construction zone!! Anyway, I thought I would
post that I got 47 mpg that trip...the best I have gotten so far. I'm sure
that the slower speed had something to do with it.

I generally go the speed limit, even in rural or through town. There is a
stretch here where it's 40 mph posted, two lane road. Many people go
45 or 50 mph, as there is usually no police. Well, I set the cruise and go
40 mph....which causes some to tailgate me until they can legally pass.
Others seem to ignore the yellow line and pass me...even on a hill.
Of course, many of them are SUVs or pickup trucks!

All in all, I think you will enjoy your driving techniques and saving gas.

Oh, and Mr9865 - when are you getting a Yaris?

I don't typically calculate my mpg, as long as I'm getting 550 km per tank, I'm satisfied. However, on a recent trip through the Rocky Mountains, we had 4 full sized adults and a loaded topper on the roof and hit 45 mpg on one tank. Besides the crazy good gas milage, I was very impressed at the car's stability and how well it handled the load. I don't think we bottomed out once over bumps either. A heightened respect for the Yar.
