No, we don't have a timing belt; we have a timing chain that is internal and requires no scheduled service.

Supposedly you have to go in for some kinda service at 100K miles.

Chain is much better than a belt as the belt has to be replaced every 60,000 miles whereas a chain only needs an inspection/possible replacement after 100,000.

Thats a relief. I wont be reaching 100k any time soon, unless I decide not to live in a dorm and end up commuting to UCLA everyday from Nor Cal

its a timing chain, which never really goes out of spec, the 100k mile service is normally for the guides and sometimes the tensioners which will usually go bad around 150k, when you will start hearing a metal scraping noise. You normally just get a timing chain kit which includes new everything.

Timing chains are usually unheard of on an "economy" car like ours. They cost more and also produce a little more noise than a belt. Another reason the Yaris kicks ass! I think the Versa and Fit both have chains as well.

Honda is notorious for their use of belts, all Nissans use chains.
