midpipe=better mpg?

Took off my cats and installed a straight pipe. I am now noticing double my mpg? Or is my sending unit broken?

I wouldn't doubt that you are seeing a significant increase in MPG. That's why 50+MPG cars existed long ago and have all but disappeared. With my typical driving pattern, my cat never gets hot enough to actually do anything other than act as a restriction, since it take 5-10 minutes of driving for it to get up to temp and actually do its job.

How hard was it to pull them? Did you do it yourself or did a shop do it?

I am interested in any modification that can improve MPG!!!!!!!

doubling is a bold statement. I am currently getting a consistent average of better than 41mpg. I couldn't imagine a single mod (of any sort) getting me into the 80s. I couldn't imagine all the mods that I could do to this car getting me there. I know people could do it but still.

just curious, what was your mpg and what are you noticing? if it helps, I usually get between 75 and 80 miles before the first bar goes.

the real problem would be can it pass any test in a state that forces emissions tests? I doubt it sadly.

It would have to be removed once a year for smog testing. Get home and put it back on and enjoy another year!

Curious as to the specs on the pipe installed and did you have to use a fooler to keep from getting a code?

i fucking doubt it

my car averages 2mpg less with my full performance exhaust, over stock. Just to confirm I threw it back on the other week & been consistantly getting 2mpg less for tank. Of course my car doesn't see much pass 2300rpm, or more then about 1/3rd throttle, so i have no use for more flow...the fucker moves on the top end tho when i do rag it out

malibu, I have a performance exhaust (catback) and my car does fine in the mpg department. I agree with you that it opened up some top end power but I don't think it robbed any low end power from what you're insinuating.

I remember a while back someone posted jokingly that the mpg didn't go down because of the mod but because they couldn't keep from enjoying the new exhaust, ie their right foot was their master.

I'm into anything that might show improvement but I want the numbers to back it up, other wise it's just the person's wishful thinking. The engine might be sending out a check light but the number's won't lie.

well, mine is manifold back with 1 100cell race cat, stock these things have 2 400cell cats...so if your cat-back then you still have the low flowing cats up front...which of course are not really hurting anything for hypermilers...i have some other things i want to try to see if i can get the best of both worlds.

i'm putting the stock exhaust back on tonight tho

Sorry for the delay! I really wasnt able to really test it to much cuz i cudnt stand the sound!! If i was manual i wudve kept it. Being auto sucks to have loud exhaust!! So i put back the catalytic before the o2 sensor to turn the cel off. I still see a lil mpg improvement and still lil better performance, but not much.
