Would it be okay if I use thinner tires? - Toyota Yaris Forums

Hello everyone, newbie in the block.

I was wondering if it'd be okay to use 16in wheels with 165/60R16 Tires on a 2010 yaris hatchback with 5drs. These are my brother's spare Scion iQ wheels that he said I could have to use for the winter. I am originally at 14 inches.

I have figured that the total diameter is about 24.3 inches, which is fine by the big tire guide, but it seems like they all recommend tires with larger width like 195 for 16inch rims. What happens if I do 165?

This is my first car so I'm not sure what the effects are of keeping your tire width but increasing diameter.

You probably mean 175/60r16?

You will not notice any difference between the two. That is very close to the Yaris size. Biggest thing you may notice is difference in weight if there is one.

the difference would be 30mm or a little more than 1 1/8" width in contact area. this would result in a heaver center of gravity on contact patch. (165:195) the factory tire I believe is a 185. so you loose 20mm of contact off stock. (right at 3/4")
it can effect your acceleration and braking distance. but at 90hp and 2300lbs, it's only going to be noticeable at race track situations.

uh.... I mean, you should be fine. it might even help to use the pizza cutters in deep snow/ice situations. that's what they use to do before plastics....

Yeah I meant 175/60r16. I was only wondering since the 16 inches that come standard on the Yaris are wider

Width really means nothing when it comes to how they impact a vehicle which is just used for its pure utilitarian purposes. If you are the type who loves to throw it into the corners and brake hard, then skinny is not the way to go. With the 175 16s you will notice:

- more responsive acceleration
- increased fuel economy
- squishy cornering with more body roll

In 2012, Toyota switched to 175/65R15 tires for the Yaris anyway, so even Toyota thinks it's okay.

They also started out the Gen2 with 175s on 14s.
