5w30 vs. 5w40

Hi guys
Im having hard time choosing between those 2 grades ..

I drive my car in extreme conditions (dust , short distances , lot of stop & go , highways more that 200 kms ) and the temperature here is hot in the summer (like 40 celcius) and winter never gets beyond 5 celcius ..

I will use a full synthetic oil and change it once a year or 10,000 km

is it true that 5w40 will give better protection that 5w30 ? or this is just a myth ?
i want to use 5w-30 as it will give a better performance and economy .. but worried about protection ...
I intend to use this oil .. the dealer here reccomends it for the yaris (1.3 2nz-fe)

5W40 or 10W40 would not be a bad choice for running the Yaris in an area with extreme heat. The higher hot viscosity (the 40) will help, but will likely cost you a little bit of fuel economy.

no synthetic

You probably don't even need synthetic unless you want to be over protective about your car. I have been using regular 5w30 oil in all my cars for years with no issues here in south Texas.

VW new beetle -198k miles, no oil issues
Toyota Tacoma -135k miles, no oil issues
Toyota Yaris -75k miles , no oil issues

you mean by "cost a little bit of fuel economy" that i lose some of the engine power too?

Correct. It would likely not be a noticeable amount.

As far as preserving your engine goes in a hot climate, ensuring that the cooling system always functions is probably going to extend the engine life more than running a slightly more heat tolerant oil. I don't think that I have ever heard of one of our engines being destroyed by oil choice, but have seen a few cases of over heating doing significant damage.

I myself am crazy with the whole oil thing, having been always instructed by my father to never go more than 3000 miles between oil changes, but I know that my continued practice of doing oil changes ever 3000 - 4000 miles is hurting my wallet more than helping my cars.

Nothing wrong with synthetic , many car makers are going in the direction of synthetic blends or synthetics . Some full synthetics can be bought for $3 > $5 a quart , the same or less than conventional . Wonder if the Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 or the 0w-40 ( new ? ) may be a good choice for those high temps . Not sure if Pennzoil is available in your region . Possibly SHELL which has the Helix Ultra 5w-40 and 0w-40 . Keep us updated on the choice and how it works for your car .

i'm not going to use the shell or mobil 1 oils as they are made locally in Egypt and many non genuine shell oils are sold here with the same pack .. cannot differ between genuine and non genuine shell oils ..

my current options are Wolf , Xado , Liqui Moly .. those are recognized european brands and guaranteed quality ..

I dont know if these brands are recognized in the America

I've posted several used oil analysis for the '08 sedan using SHELL full synthetic 5w-30 and 5w-20 with good results . Should be able to find those by using the SEARCH at this site . It's you car , so your choice is good by me .
