CV/axle nut

I was cleaning my ABS sensors the other day and came across the axle bolt in the front wheels. It isn't your standard bolt, does anyone know how you would go about removing this? It doesn't have a cotter pin in it but an actual indent in the nut. I'd like to know how to remove this incase my hub bearing start to go or if I even need to remove it for any reason.

Thanks

It requires a 30mm socket and a tool for un-denting the part that gets dented against the slot in the axle. I use a tapered, round steel tool that is meant for being pounded to line up bolt holes, etc.

Its a 12 point nut, isn't it?
Harbor Freight recently released a big 1/2 drive 12 point impact socket set. It goes up to 32mm. Their pro sockets are very good for the money.

Correct - 12 pt, 30 mm.

thanks for the responses guys. I took a look at CanadianTire today and the only 30mm socket they have was a 6 point. Is a 6 point adequate for a 12 point nut, or does it increase the slippage and potential to strip? If a 12 point is highly recommended then I'll keep looking for one.

My second Q is can you just use an impact gun to remove the nut without having the pop out the indented part?

A six point won't fit on it, and no - you can't just blast the indent with an impact wrench.

That place is like purgatory for the home mechanic. I go in there for one little part, and the whole day passes before my eyes, shopping cart full of stuff that I don't remember getting.
