2008 Yaris S driving belt

I recently got an oil change at a toyota dealership and they mentioned I needed a new driving belt for $174+ which includes parts and labor. My Yaris has 40500 miles on it. They said it's starting to crack. BTW, how many belts does my yaris have? Is this normal wear and tear and is the price reasonable.

The Yaris only has one belt and it's about $15 from an auto parts store. It only takes loosening of 2 bolts to change it (in about 15 minutes). You can pop the hood and look at it to see if it really is staring to crack.

This is a good example as to why they're often called a "stealership".

busted belt w/ 40K

Yes, the belts do break! My belt snapped just today on the highway. It's a 2008 Yaris (manual) w/ almost 40K. The auto store had the belts stocked at $9 and $12.

On my last car (a subie), I let it lapse until the squeal was unbearable. When I finally changed the 2 belts, one of them was literally running on what looked like 2 strings. Apparently, most of the belt crumbled away, leaving only 2 sections of the V-belt intact.

Apparently, the tension adjustment is old-school style (put a stick on the alternator and yank it tight). Just to be safe, get one of these:
