Transmission service at 100,000

I am getting close to my 100,000 mile transmission service, now I was really was on the impression you want to change the filter and complete flush of the fluid, I have gone to several fluid places and they all said the exact same thing "you do not change the filters on these cars you, its a screen and it comes clean with the fluid exchange" this is what I have been quoted from several places and a chain called Valvoline, and they also said the maxLife is WS ATF approved, which was good relief. a year ago I thought I would be bringing in toyota's fluid by the gallons for them to use. :-) I did the research on MaxLife and it is approved, but is the screen thing and not changing it the truth, they said most cars in the last 10 years use a screen and doesn't require servicing. any comments, I will need to make a decision soon.

Yes I travel 61 miles each way to work, thank god for AudioBooks. Its all interstate and my car has taken a toll with rocks and chips in the windhshield. Oh and get this, the state of Kentucky does there license plates based on the value of my car, and from jan 1st 2007 to Jan 1 2008, my car went up $432 in value. I am meeting with them tomorrow since I have to pay my license plate renewal by end of this year, but they are going to re-evaluate my car. They said the reason cars are holding values is with the economy more people are hanging on to there vehicles, I don't quite see how this would cause the value not to go down, but will see if they knock anything off tomorrow, they said I would have to sign some papers .

DO NOT USE ANYTHING but Toyota type WS... It's $6 a quart and you really only need to do a drain and fill which requires less than 2 quarts. DO NOT USE valvoline, it will ruin your automatic transmission. You are correct on the screen.

we haven't changed one of these strainers as toyota calls it in the 6 years ive been here. we do however sell them to customers who want to change it though. part number 35330-0w020 is the strainer and 90301-32010 is the gasket for strainer. you might also need this pan gasket as well 35168-52020.....

drain and fill is about 2.6 - 2.8 quarts on the auto.

Wow, 100K already. Nice!

Can you tell us what service/repairs you've needed so far (aside from oil changes and tires)?

Thanks!

OKay, Im approaching 100K, should be there by May. here is all I have done guys who want to know. And I guess this is not unusual for toyotas so I hope people weren't expecting me to have problems already :-) But I do tons of highway driving, I guess that is better driving for the engine anyhow. but I changed oil every 5,000 the first change was at 1500 miles on the odo, and then 5,000 there after until I got up to 36,000 and that was with regular 5,000 mile Mobil Oil 5W30, then I switched to Mobile One Fully synthetic at 36,000 and still changed every 5 to 6 thousand, had a oil analyst done at ~50K no problem. Using toyota filters the whole time. at 70K I did the drain plug on the trans and topped back off. if I would have thought about it more, I would have done this every 30K this trans fluid process, its no different then an oil change, and I think I would have a higher percentage of cleaner fluid, but it sounds like I just do the same process again shortly and then again every 25K-30K and forget paying for anything further on the trans Im sure doing it that often with 100K stuff will get a decent change over in fluid after a short time. My car other then that has never had any brake service except an adjustment to do the emergency brake, they say I have 65% pads still on the front. Ill probably have valvoline do the coolant here shortly. Don't have any thoughts on brake fluid but I may do that when the pads need changing. I may change batteries in the next year, I have a lot of electronics running in the car and I think I take a bigger toll on my battery but its been fine. I did have to address some rattles in the dash and under the hood release cables touching air intake. I just got a ScanGauge II for Xmas, that is a neat gadget. instantly with watching that improved gas mileage if you get craxy with how you drive you can get 45 mpg, i did after a 55 miles on the trip setting, considering i normally get 37 in the winter. It really gives you a great look at how your car uses the gas. it will amaze you.

Enjoy!

I believe WAL-MARTs SUPERTECH auto tranny fluid is WS rated for TOYOTA . Should state it on back of the bottle . Quite sure this is a WARREN petroleum product .

a full flush would be more than 2.8 quarts though, no? I mean, if you truly do an AT service, you should evacuate all fluid (torque converter included).

MOst newer cars if not all are made to be hooked up to the flush machine. It pumps in new fluid and pulls out the old, then they run the car for aminute to clear the torque converter and it pushes in a round of new fluid to the entire system. No need to open up the tranny anymore to flush fluids.

Yeah, but Toyota type WS doesn't call for a flush, ever. I have talked to my dealer and they have NEVER done a flush on a type WS fluid tranny. Type T-IV is a different story.

And I would NEVER trust Supertech in my tranny, engine, or anything...

I've decided, that since I did just a drain and fill with Toyota WS about 75K, if I do a drain and fill every 20K from here on out, I should be okay without having having a full flush done. I really now wish I would have started this when I got the car and would have done it at 30K intervals, but I was hooked the the 100K interval just waiting, but I feel if you change this on a regular basis it will eventually get the fluid pretty much exchange... Still accepting thoughts on this.
