TOYOTA ; 0w-20 synthetic for 10,000 mile intervals for
some 2010 models . Go to , http://priuschat.com/news/toyota-upp...-toyota-models . Can click on any one of the 5 pics of the pages for a closer look at the details . The new 1.8 ltr. engines for COROLLA , MATRIX ( Pontiac VIBE ) , PRIUS , and SCION XD call for 5w-20 . Stated on oil caps . Wonder if they'll do the same for the YARIS , but using a 0w-30 synthetic ( or 5w-20 synthetic ) . Aware of the controversial 5w-20 T.S.B. by TOYOTA .

This is a big chance in policy. I wonder if they will extend this to all models? I'd like to go to 10,000 miles interval, because I already use a synthetic.

Toyota of Japan allows usage of 0-20W synthetic oil...I've already ran 0-20W on my car for a solid 4 month period...it's awesome and you can drive hard occasionally.
There is proof of pics of Vitz owners in Japan buying 0-20w and using it on their cars. It is safe....its just that, Toyota of America is always the last one to get a TSB out for it so then everyone believes it. |

A few general comments on this interesting development. 0w20 synthetic isn't any more expensive than 5w30 synthetic.[1] e.g. M1 5w30 is the same price as M1 0w20. So the added expense is from requiring synthetic rather than requiring 0w20. The same applies to the mention of improved protection. They are saying that 0w20 synthetic protects better than 5w30 conventional, and not that 0w20 protects better than 5w30, in general.
If Prius owners are paying $100 for an oil change, even with synthetic, then they have more money than sense. My oil changes cost me $26.30 using Mobil1 + Fram Toughguard filter. (Toughgard is a decent filter, unlike the regular Fram filters.) Of course, I do mine myself. I'm not sure what the going rate is for synthetic oil changes at lube services, but I doubt it's any $100.00. -Steve [1] Correction. I had a look at Walmart. And although the quart bottles for the M1 and Valvoline 0w20 products are the same price as the 0w30 (around $6/qt), the 0w30 is available in a 5 qt jug, at least for the M1, for $23.50, which works out to $4.70/qt. The 0w20 is not available in the jugs. Last edited by sbergman27; 03-26-2010 at 07:20 AM. |

And while we're on the subject of *change in policy*...I was on Amsoil's site today, looking at what products are available on their Yaris build sheet, I could have sworn that they used to recommend 0W20 for the Yaris, but not anymore, it seems. They listed two suitable viscosities: 0W30 & 5W30...no 0W20, no 5W20

did you notice " THE OWNERS MANUAL WILL BE AMENDED TO REQUIRE THE USE OF 0w-20 IF THE VEHICLE IS FACTORY EQUIPPED WITH SYNTHETIC OIL " . What's with that ?

just go 10k and just make sure you buy oil in between and keep the receipts..change ur oil ur self as well is a must..the way i figures is that out of 5 years if change every 6 months you should have atleast 10 oil chages or 40 bottles of 1 liter oil. or mileage/fm divided by 8000 kms times 4 bottles = # of 1 liter bottles of oil that should be on the receipts.

Since I've been trashing Xw20 oils with fair frequency on this board, perhaps I should note an alternative that probably gets you fairly close to Xw20 fuel efficiency: Mobil 1 0w30 Advanced Fuel Economy. It's kosher with the warranty and claims a measurable improvement over 5w30. If the difference between 5w30 and 0w20 is in the range of 1% - 2%, as appears to be the case from the information I've seen, and 0w30 AFE is measurably better than 5w30, then how much difference can there really be between 0w20 and 0w30 AFE?
This oil has a 100C cSt of 11.0, compared to 11.3 for regular M1 5w30. So it's not overly thin. (The range for a 30wt oil is 9.30-12.49.) And has an HTHS of 2.99, compared to M1 5w30's 3.1. Which is a little on the light side. But it's not sitting right down at the 2.6 limit required by API SM/ILSAC GF4 (I can't remember which. Maybe both.) like the M1 0w20 AFE does. Although the HTHS number is an important one for fuel economy, it doesn't tell the whole story. Friction modifiers in the additive package also play a significant role, and are another differentiator between various oils. Presumably, the M1 AFE line has good friction modifiers. http://tinyurl.com/yl8yuyt http://tinyurl.com/yzqcd9c http://tinyurl.com/yk7bg8s -Steve |
