Sounds like the seal between the pump and tank (under the rear seat) is the problem.

The gas tank top is a little tricky to tighten properly. Because of the super coarse threads, when you start to tighten it, it seems like it is cross threading. You can remove the rear seat to gain access to it and then tighten it the rest of the way. Toyota has a special spanner tool that fits in the grooves on the top of the tank, but I just used a plastic dead blow hammer and a piece of hardwood to tighten mine. Just don't use anything which can create sparks.
Here's the top of the tank - You can see the grooves: Gas Tank Top.jpg Here's the o-ring gasket, which in your case is probably not making a good seal: Tank - O Ring.jpg Here are the threads on the top of the tank: Tank - Inside.jpg |

thanks a million, i dont know but my dad ask if i drove the car while the fuel tanks was open, like moving from one pump to another at the garage,or could it be leaking from the black pipe this could have damaged the seal, now i need to know how to remove the seats, i got some funny looking screws, will take a pic and load later today, also when i run it dry i sometimes hear tut noise coming from the back what could that be

Looks like this: The black pipe is easy to check from under the car. It just has a hose clamp that snugs it to the nipple on the tank. |
