Shifting..

Ok I need help.. as you guys know the us l/b didnt come with a tach..

I want to make sure that I am treating my car good.. does anyone know what is a good speed is for each gear .. I am planning on getting either a gauge or scan but have to wait....

like

1st gear till 15 mph
2nd gear till like 35 mph
3rd gear till blah blah blah.

any help would be great since i cant see the rpm's yet..and its hard to hear the engine on this car at times..

Drive it using the shift points that give you the smoothest acceleration and don't worry about the numbers.

the smoothest meaning no hops or delay?

I can normally drive it fine but my husband not so good at it lol but I will pass that on to him :)

This is the best mix between fuel economy and performance..so shifting a bit earlier than these speeds should net you a bit better gas mileage, but less performance... The best thing is to get into higher gears as quickly as possilbe..anytime i'm crusing at more than 40 mph, i (personally) ride in 5th gear..

TRD you are the best .. I should have looked at the manual first I am sorry.. but I am writing it all on a Post-It now for my husband to stick on the car when he drive so he knows when to shift....

As far as keeping the car from jerking back or forward when letting out the clutch...it will take you some time to get use to the clutch and rev-matching (re-engaging clutch with the RPMs exactly where you need them for the speed you're going..though this is REALLY hard to learn without a tachometer which allows you to physically SEE the RPMs and if they jump UP or DOWN when you let out on clutch)

I can't imagine ever going into 5th at under 50 mph let alone 40-45. I usually find myself down shifting into 4th whenever my speed drops below 100 kph (62 mph). I can't stand lugging the engine. And it has no guts below 3000 rpm. I prefer to be in the powerband for safety and fun. Obviously I'm no hypermiler. I commute 100 kl per day and prefer to enjoy the drive.

Right. I've found you can really thrash the shit out of the Yaris and not come close to hitting the rev limiter. My advice would be to just have fun driving it and don't worry about it. :shrug:

The lack of tach is totally overblown in my opinion.

FWIW, I typically shift out of first around 30mph, and usually skip 3rd and go into 4th around 60mph. :P

hahaha..sounds a little like me. When i first got the car, i realized i was shifting out of first around 20 mph and i thought THAT was high, idjiit!!

i will either SKIP 4th or 5th, depending on which gear i will finish up in. in other words, if i'm accelerating up to get on the highway, i will go from 1,2,3,5.. but i'm just accelerating up to 30-40 mph i will go from 1,2,4..with the final shift to 4th being after i get up to my crusing speed. BUT, I can't say this will help you with gas mileage..though you gotta consider that cars are like people, it takes more energy to walk around EXTREMELY SLOW and carefuel than it does to walk swift and relaxed..

Yeah, I'm out of first by 10-15, but I sit in second until a solid 40 and skip third. Its the only way this car has any zip, haha. But out of first at 30? That thing is ready to torque off the mounts at 30 in first, haha. You CrAzY.
