Tire Pressure Monitoring System experience...
Driving the other day and the TPMS warning light came on. I did not feel anything unusual in the handling with the car. I decided to pull over and inspect the tires. I kicked the tires and everything looked OK. I figured it was a false warning.
The next day, just out of curiosity, I decided to check the air pressure in my tires. Low and behold, the TPMS was right. 16 PSI in one of the tires. I was surprised that the tire side wall did not sink more with that low of a pressure.

My TPMS came on recently, I haven't noticed any difference in the feel of the tires. It came on last year around the same time and I checked the tires but everything seemed fine.
I think I need a better pressure gauge though, the one I have doesn't work very well. |

I really like TPMS because I am not good about checking the air in my tires on a regular basis. It's nice to have a light on my dash tell me when one of my tires needs air.

TPMS isnt made to tell you when to add air to the tires. You should do that once a month as a matter of course.

Mine fires off even at extreme warm to cold weather changes when all the tires suddenly read equally low. I am a big fan of the system.

smart tpms will come on at 15% below nominal tire pressures...on any wheel.
older systems worked when one wheel was below a certain amount of pressure below the rest so you had a problem if you never checked them....they all leak evenly and over time get low....equally so the tpms wouldnt come on. but....because people are stupid and government wants to increase fuel economy of every automobile produced....we have to 'monitor' tire pressures in all cars produced in production year-08. |

Mine came on for the first time time 2 days ago. All the tires eyeballed OK (my gauge was home, in the shop), and as I drive without a spare anyway.....I headed home, 120 miles away, the first 60 no services. At some point the light went out, and the pressure is good on all tires according to my gauge (now carried as usual in the car).
It was snowy and muddy, on a primitive dirt road, maybe that confused the sensor? Oh yeah, I didn't let not having a spare bother me, as I also don't carry a jack. Last edited by Idahotom; 11-22-2010 at 09:58 AM. |

I liked it better when cars didn't have all of this electronic nanny nonsense. If your too lazy to check your tire pressure often, then you shouldn't be driving in the first place. Driving is a privledge, not a right. You don't leave your house before checking if you locked the doors...same idea here.
