Have you failed smog and what mods caused you to fail?

So my car is a 08 which means next year I will have to smog the vehicle since I live in california. If your in a area that has emissions testing were there any mods that caused you to fail such as underdrive pulley, Things im worried about and have known to fail smog are intake and exhaust unless there is a carb sticker.

Intake and header for sure will make you fail visual. I had a Neuspeed intake on my GTI, passed the sniffer with flying colors, but failed visual. Even if it has a CARB sticker, the station may choose to fail you (then you'll have a headache trying to deal with that to have them correct it). I never heard of pulleys causing anyone to fail.

They can't fail visual for the item that has a CARB sticker!!
The EO number is entered into the system, giving the smog tech a waiver on that item.

Yeah the stupid thing is pretty much all the bolt on mods for the yaris wont really change how the tail pipe emission is. In-fact something like a intake may actually lower it. And really thats all that should matter.

They should go after the smog exempt cars that have strait pipes and no catalytic converters.

Smog and/or emissions from cars are not a good thing, period. But with your lower population density, it's ok to have fewer restrictions.

I am grateful for our regulations in California. Los Angeles is WAY cleaner than before they were instituted.

Always save your OEM parts in California in case a re-install-for-smog is in order.

My Mini Cooper S was highly modified....all I needed to re-install (temporarily) was the factory air box for testing. Thankfully.

(Oh, I did that preemptively)

Depending on what kind of smog station you get (test only or regular), you can have/not have mods to your car.

Of course removing the obvious ones beforehand will make life easier.

Just saying.

Yeah i kept mine all my factory parts i kept in a giant tupperware bin in my garage in case i ever want to put anything back to stock. I wanted to put in headers and possibly the microimage intake but might hold off until i smog my vehicle that way i dont have to worry about taking it back off and on again for the next 2 years.

Oh, I have read countless of incidents online where they failed the car despite having the CARB number/sticker. It's illegal for them to, but it still happens, and you gotta deal with the headaches that it brings. One or two of those incidents I read about, the tech was fired.

I'm glad it works for you, I just couldn't handle that. I'm certain my car and truck would both fail. Most of the people on infamousnissan say to take $200 with you to the smog tester place and just pay the tech off to pass you. I'm certain that's not legal but that's what the majority of those guys do. I guess it's difficult to keep a 20+ year old japantruck passing smog.

Well they just changed the laws recently from a misdemeaner to a felony for illegal smogs so its going to be harder and harder to find people willing to pass a car for money under the table.

Especially with these newer cars, you simply aren't going to raise the emissions if you still have the catalytic converters. Even Garms Yaris is absurdly clean compared to any modern car that is larger than a Yaris.

What always makes me laugh is all this smog equipment causes these cars to emit carbon dioxide, which then supposedly is another huge problem(of course it actually is not.)

So tempted to move to a state that does not have any inspections at all. But I know my mechanic really well, and he'll let me get away with anything. Of course in Ma he has to hook the computers up to my car, and do the emissions test, but I am not worried about that.
