Why is it Yari?

-is
Basis bases
Analysis analyses

Portcullis portcullises
Metropolis metropolises
Pen!ses

-us
Walruses
Octopus(es?)
Buses
Radii
Campuses
Fungus fungi

Notice the pattern here?

How the hell did Yaris turn into Yari(i)?

Only latin nouns ending in -ius have -ii as the plural form... but this form isn't often used in American English.

Yarii certainly isn't the plural of Yaris, but some people like to use it here. I think we had a vote on this subject a very long time ago.

So, yeah, at best, we can call them "Yares", right?

Because it's certainly not a "Yarius"

I always wanted to bring something up that was similar to this...

What the hell is up with some people that call their one singular Yaris.... a Yari?

You know as in, "Oh, I just changed the oil on my Yari last night."

You only have one, so why pluralize it? (I know, some here have two or more...) It's not like you'd say, "Oh, I just changed the oil on my Corollas last night" if you only have one Corolla.

Yeah, that's even dumber than referring to more than one Yaris as Yari. Wtf?

Anyway, I saw a herd of Yarises huddled together at the dealership this evening. The days are getting shorter here.

Because Yari sounds better (to me IMHO) - It's like a nickname or shortening of the name Yaris. I like to call mine Yar Yar - it's very yarisianian sounding

Always disliked the name Yaris. I just like to call it a Vitz! Or if you've got a sedan, Belta or Vios.

So, what's the plural of Vitz and Vios???

^^^^^ This . I think both 'Yarises' and 'Vioses' sound too cumbersome. I like 'Vitzes' and 'Beltas'. However, either might confuse some people re the location of your car.

No, this is what we do here!
No your question was valid.
I think I'm just going to de-badge my Yar-Yar and just get a 1980 Corvette rear emblem for it...after all, mine's a red 2 door...people will just think Chevy downsized it finally

That's not so bad..I'll add this. Sometimes when I Google Yaris I get images of "yaris sanchez" flashing across my screen....now there are some images for the Yaris brochure!..."the Yaris Sanchez special edition" kind of like Eddie Bauer fords. Don't fib here now...how many of you just googled yaris sanchez? My biggest fear is one of these days I will google Yaris and those pictures will pop up and my wife will walk in right when it happens. I can here it now...so this is your "Yaris world."...LOL!

I finally googled Yaris Sanchez (stripper/model) whatever Definitely the opposite of Marie Osmond from back in the day.
She always comes up when I search 'yaris' - I'm sure they didn't name the car after her.
Bairjo, HOLD YOUR GROUND if that happens! We'll back you up!!
It's really weird when you google certain things & what you come up with. Yeah, it's scary

I like my Yaris more. Subtler curves, less junk in the trunk, also literally.
