any bets we will NEVER see this in the US??

amazing when you think if it - the newest microcar offered in the US was back in early 1970s - honda600.

thats 40 yrs folks - and EVERYONE else outside of the US can get a microcar no problem!

I don't consider the "Smartcar" legit - it is twice the cost of what it should be and utterly boutique - not a Joe Ave commuting car for mere mortals and poor slobs like me.

Wow. So they have the this car, Aygo, then Yaris. I thought Aygo was going to be the smallest but I guess Toyota is going smaller!! Actually there are numerous reports Toyota will bring over this car or a car quite like it to the U.S. to compete with the Smart. Although I think Toyota's version, especially for the U.S. will be cheaper than the Smart. We'll see! I can't wait to see the production version. It would be cool to bring it here. Gas is only going up, why not have this as a secondary car...oh wait, SUVs.

Echo - that was the rumor from last Fall. The newest one is that Toyota will NOT be offering it here afterall.

like the earlier rumor - just read it online somewhere this week.

not surprised.

I can't even buy a Yaris Manual Hatchback with Power windows in this whole damned Country - I've gotta order it and wait 6-months!!

and i'm doing just that - what a joke!

I know the previous or current gen Smart is sold in Canada but not the U.S. But Chrysler who owns Smart I believe or has a stake in it, will bring over the next gen 2008 model to the U.S. We have small cars here but what we consider small here most of the world especially Europe would consider full-sized
Just kidding, but yeah the standards are different. But no superminis that I know of...yet.

A local used car dealer where I live had 4 or 5 of the smarts imported. Didn't have a sticker price on them, and the vin# area had some special thing on it about meeting U.S. inspections. As far as the lenght, it made my Yaris look like a limo in comparison . Dug the glass roof though, and the analog clock reminded me of my '71 Ford.

This is the smart we're getting in the US.

70 hp inline 3 cylinder, normally aspirated (no turbo, as previously rumored). Much nicer than the 1st gen. Base model starts under $12k US, cabrio under $17k US. It's cute, no doubt, but a niche car because of its size VS its price tag. Very bad move, IMHO. They're going to have a hard enough time just convincing Americans it's safe to drive on the highway, but then to charge a premium for it? I want one, but not for that price.

Found out that the only dealer in Georgia will be a Mercedes dealer out of Atlanta (only 60 dealers slated nationwide). I'm betting each scheduled service includes a bottle of personal lubricant.
