Thats awesome. I want a road trip....

If you're comin' to Cali, bring shorts, flip flops, and shades. Drink lots of water. Surf board optional =).

EDIT: Depending on your age, I recommend bringing condoms.

Which path are you taking? Interstate 10 or 20?

Pack some water, and have fun! I've done two NYC-LA trips in the Yaris Hatch (once in mine, and once in my wife's), and it's a total blast. This car just inhales miles, and the tank will outlast your bladder! As far as cost, it depends on how long you want to take. Both trips were made as fast as possible, so the only real expense was gas. The more you stop along the way, the more expensive it will be.

set aside a budget for things.....it's best to bring food with you and stop only for gas and sleep and make sure you get enough sleep really this is the most important thing of all (unless you're like me and want to finally say you've been inside a jack in the box ----that's another story)

Get a AAA membership, and talk to your cell phone company about the best plan for a trip like you intend because roaming charges can be brutal.
What kind of trip will it be? and how long have you got to do it?
