Is it me or does the Yaris have a touchy clutch?

Is anybody else having the same problem?

I just got my car (Yaris LB 2007 manual transmission) a couple of weeks ago and I'm having a really hard time shifting gears smoothly. The first gear is especially touchy!!

I only drive it around for errands and stuff, not on a daily basis, so it is possible that I'm still in the transition phase of adapting to a different car? I have been driving Hondas manual transmissions for a lot of years, and they do feel a little different (easier, I think).

I did not purchase the car new, but I've had clutches go out on me before, and it doesn't feel like that is the case.

I've read somewhere in the forum that other posters have had that same problem in the beginning. How long did it take you to get through this "transition" phase, if that's what it is? Right now, it's really unpleasant, almost feels like I'm learning how to drive again.

Can anything be done to adjust the clutch? Should I have it checked, just in case?

Any ideas, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I didn't have any real problems when I got mine - other than adjusting to a light clutch pedal (the spring doesn't have much resistance) it shifts just fine.

Perhaps you can elaborate on the issue. Are you grinding? Is it just hard to get into gear? What symptoms other than being 'touchy'...

i have no problem with the clutch, and ive had 4 and 6 puck clutches on my old Honda's before, i think the clutch is perfectly fine.

only gripe is the slow electronic throttle.

Ah, yes, sorry about that.

It's not grinding. It's really hard to explain...

It seems like I have to put a lot of weight on the left pedal to shift gears smoothly otherwise I can't shift gears. So, when I think I'm pushing on the pedal all the way, I'm really not, I might be missing 1/2 a centimeter or so, but it's enough to make the car stall.

Come to think of it, it can happen also when I downshift. Frustrating

TRD axle back cured my touchy clutch. Now that I can hear the engine it's much easier to feather the engagement.

There is a beakin period since the flywheel is still fresh. Just like there is a breakin period when you do a break job when the rotor is new or freshly resurfaced. So it will feel little different as you start to drive it more. Also you could be used to driving a clutch thats already worn compared to a new one. Every car is going to ahve a different point where the clutch engages.

When i first learned to drive i was taugh to not touch the gas. Remove the clutch pedal til you can feel the point of engagement then let go and whala the car is moving on its on with you revving the gas while letting go of the clutch. Which is a good way to wear out your clutch fast.

That is the only real way to get a good feel of your clutch. Eventually you will have that point memorized and then you can time your shifts precisely.

Yes, the clutch is weird in the Yaris. It has a very long throw and a very soft touch. It begins to grab VERY low on the pedal, but doesn't fully release until very near the top. It takes some getting used to, as does the electronic throttle and the fact that you can't really hear the engine.

You'll get used to it.

After awile you will think that what you feel is normal and other cars are the ones that have problems. Whenever i drive my acura from time to time i hate how the gas pedal feels kinda hard when pressing down and how the steering is so stiff.

I have become acustome to drive by wire and electric steering dare i say it!

it's all been said by others already i guess... the clutch is perfectly fine. It's the slow response DBW the problem.

talking about a light clutch, if you guys have not driven the new hondas, you don't know what is really a light clutch.

You don't need to push a Honda's clutch very far to shift or start up from 1st.. hmm.. not the case with toyotas.

Got it. I had no problem with the FIT or the other Honda's I've had in the past, but this is my first Toyotal. I guess they're just adjusted a little differently, uh?

Excuse me but what's "DBW" ?
