Engine kinda noisy?

I noticed the other day that my wifes Yaris seems kinda noisy. Is this common with these engines? The car runs smooth as silk and is a great little car, it just seems to tick alot. The oil level is fine and no C/E lights or anything.

The valves have to be manually adjusted on these cars-ticking might mean they are getting more out of adjustment than they should be. The service isn't recommened by Toyota till 60K, but you might have a service dept. give it a listen and go with what they recommend. Mine are totally quiet at this point.

yes.

they could have made it quieter (well, not the engine itself) with more sound insulation, but at the cost of making it heavier. its not really bad for a sub compact.

My car is loud too.

But whats really annoying me right now are two things:

1)The car idles a little rough, dropping to 500rpm at times, and when I shut off the car, it sounds like its farting out the muffler, and it trembles a bit. NEVER use to do this before(maybe 10k miles ago), currently at 47k miles.

2) When In drive or reverse, there is a loud constant sqiking sound mostly from under the car. It gets louder, when the RPMs are lower, and goes away when the rpm goes a bit higher, but the noise isnt from the engine bay since I stuck my head to listen, and it doesnt seem to be the belts. What could this be?

I dont have time these days with work and school and GF to be taking my car in for hours.

gerbils do tend to squeak when you make them run fast...

When I had my stock exhaust, there were times when I wasn't sure if my car was on or off, so I'm kind of confused by this thread. To me, the Yaris is VERY quiet.

+1 for a quiet Yaris. I can't even tell if the engine is running sometimes. Then again I have less than 5k on mine.

My car is really quiet at low speed, in fact when I first test drove it, I didn't know if it was on and off when I came to the first red light.

On the highway, at higher speed, you can hear the engine a lot better and I think that's normal.

Once the engine is warmed up, mine would idle, while parked on a busy street and you'd have to lean up to the hood to realize it's running. Mobel-1 oil and premium gas helps... However, when the engine is cold, and into it's high-rpm idle, it's loud and needs some time to quiet down.

My engine squeals like a mofo. Just recently started doing this too. I think it's the accessory belt that needs to be tightened/replaced, though.

mine isn't noisy to where i'd bring it up to a mechanic.. i just hit 47,000 today and aside from a light whistle around 70 mph and the sounds of the road, i don't hear much more...
