Holy Rustoleum Brake Man !!

Help !! I installed some gorgeous front rotors and a rear disc brake conversion kit on saturday. On sunday it rained off an on all afternoon and night. When I woke up and went out to the car this morning my new rotors were covered in rust !! Well I figured the pads would wear away the rust where they rubbed, but how do I get all this additional rust off. Brake cleaner doesn't take it off.

My gorgeous wheels now have a rust back drop. Cosmetically, I'm stressing out. I'm a clean freak. Having rust like this show on a clinically detailed car is unacceptable. Am I going to have to take off my wheels, use steel wool and a rust cleaner on the rotors, then spray them with brake cleaner to get off any residue, put my wheels back on, everytime I wash my car? Is there not a solvent I can put on a rag, then wipe the rotors off, and presto.... rust removed? Here's a couple of pics...

I have the same set up as you. Everytime I wash my car the same thing happens. The rust will
go away in a day or so, atleast it does on mine.

you could high temp paint the slotted rotor on non-braking surfaces? some rotors come with anti-corrosion paint on mating surfaces that holds up well... don't know how it'd work out for you.

the drilled rotor... don't know what to tell you. maybe a few fun laps around the block?

rotors come with a very light (heavy weight) oil coating, but im pretty sure any of that would burn off. but maybe if you wiped them down before washing, it would help things out.

research some metallurgy type stuff... im no fan of chemistry (physics by degree...) but there's gotta be something...

I took the rotors and drums off and had them powdercoated. No problems anymore. Photos in my garage.

Its typical for untreated metals. Once the zinc wears off the braking surface the same thing will probably happen to the rotor itself. Klink nailed it. Either paint them or powdercoat. Powdercoat will last longer.

Let it rust out evenly, then it will look OK.

I had brakes like that on an old 98 talon and eclipse... just leave it and drive... it'll go away.

paint it...inside the fins too. dont glob it on there though...just the inside and outside of the hub, and turn rotor where you're looking onto fins and get in there...just the top or outside area.

also...if you're thinkin about powder coat...it's a bad idea. powder retains heat where paint wont.

a little flat black paint will go a long way. don't waste money on fancy stuff. a $0.99 cent can from Home depot (economy color spray paint) will last almost as long. it'll be one of those "maintenance" things you do everytime you rotate your tires. i used the same economy spray paint on my rear drums and it lasted 2 years with no issues.

Problem Solved !!

Well I took ya'lls advice and painted the exposed area on my new rotors to eliminate the ugly rust. You saw the before, now here's the after !
