next gen-interior upgrade

http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...wed-draft.html

if a chevy aveo can have a decent interior then the next gen yaris had better step up the yaris interior big time (imo, the yaris has the cheapest looking interior of any modern subcompact on the market)

the current aveo was the only interior that i considered almost as cheap looking as the yaris.

Aside from the fact that the pic is just a computer-rendered image of something that could be the top-of-the-line specced-out Aveo it seems to me that people who buy a Yaris (or any Toyota for that matter) are rarely more concerned about appearance than substance... They value the fact that the dull-looking intrument panel on their Toyota has not become creaky after 5 years of use.

i think that is a real pic of a production model. if its not, it would appear from the interior of the RS (below) that it is a fairly accurate rendering of what the actual interior will be. i dont see why making a dependable, fuel efficient car and having a decent interior have to be mutually exclusive. there is no reason the next gen yaris has to have such a barren, plastic laden, cold feel to the interior.

and there are plenty of threads on rattles in the dash of yarii that are far less than 5 years old.

if you want to see a more spec'd out model, here is an actual photo of the interior of the RS model that was at the Detroit Auto Show.

Heh! I could never go back to just one glove box, and those knee-bangers look awfully low. I'll take the Yari's cheap-but-functional layout any day.

i figured this would turn into a toyo vs gm thing. its not about that.

i think we can have a functional AND less chincy interior in the next yaris without losing the primary attributes of the car.

im fine with a basic interior (for example, while the fit interior, material wise, looks better than the yaris, it is a bit busy loking imo), but basic doesnt have to mean a giant slab of plastic devoid of all life. does it?

for example, here is the interior of a subcompact that is basic and simple looking (which would fit with the yaris basic theme of simple and efficient), but not at all cheap looking:

The pic is a higher-equipped 2010 Polo. The real comparison should be drawn with the outgoing Polo, which looks like this:

The difference in basic ideas is hard to ignore: the Polo is a conservative German compact with the looks (massive square black plastic panels and numerous square buttons) to match, the Yaris... well, it's not. So they're hard to compare. Also, I don't feel the interior design of the Yaris falls out of line in comparison with the rest of the Toyota lineup (iQ, Aygo, Auris).

PS. I'm one of the guys who does not need the plactic on top of the dash to "feel soft to the touch". I just don't spend any time touching my car's dashboard.

that trim is fine, too. i dont care how plastics feel when i touch them either, but the yaris interior seems as though no effort was put into it at all. i dont feel like that interior belongs in any car except something found at toys-r-us.

a basic interior like the Polo has would suit the yaris fine. its just the kind of interior that belongs in a basic economy car. just because current owners are used to the current interior doesnt mean they need to keep it the same in the next gen. im not saying it has to look like the polo interior exactly, just make some effort to make the interior remotely inviting to look at. after all, drivers spend far more time on the inside of the car than anywhere else. there was another thread with a pic of a chinese yaris look a like, and even that had a nicer looking interior than the yaris. i see no compelling reason why the yaris interior needs to have any consistencies with the iq or any other car in their lineup. i can name several toyota models with very different types of interiors.

and mods, i dont know why this is in the off topic...it is about the toyota yaris and its interior.

I have friends who have more expensive cars who when I apologise for my "cheap" interior, they actually say that it fits the car, and it doesnt look cheap to them. In fact a friend of mine has a Chevy S10 Extreme that I think looks cheaper then my Yaris.

you want to change the Yaris interior ?

then you will get more cost, and lower mileage.

it is what it is. the BASE model Toyota.

it will still will be far more reliable, and less stuff will break... than -any- TOP model car at any price except Lexus

why would we get lower mileage? added weight? a nicer interior might add some weight, but i think it would be an inconsequential amount. the incoming Fiesta has a decent interior and looks like it will have mpg ratings of around 30 city/38 highway and weigh more than the yaris.

i get the yaris is toyota's base model. it isnt an excuse to have the cheapest looking interior in its class. people talk like a nicer looking interior suddenly takes away from the ability of the yaris to be reliable.

If you're not happy, you could do your own custom work to the interior as some members have done.
