Looks like I'm picking up a Yaris!

Hey everybody!

I've been a lurker for sometime on here, even though Ive never owned a Yaris. It looks like I might actually be picking up a 2009 Yaris HB this coming Friday. I have already put a deposit on it and am looking forward to getting this sucker tuned up a bit.

I'm trading in my 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata Touring (much to my dismay). The Miata is A W E S O M E, however, the size of the car payment is not (Gotta start paying back those student loans). I was able to work out a deal on this Yaris for less than $150 a month - WAYYY less than my current payment.

The Yaris is a 2009 with 54k miles on it. 5-speed, Maroon, and looks totally clean (its 200 miles away, picking it up on Friday). Although its pretty base, I plan to add cruise control as well as a good bit of tire/suspension mods.

I have recently become pretty active in AutoX and was glad to see that there are a good number of people who like to take their Yarises(?) through cones. I had a 2011 Mazda2 with full suspension (before the Miata) that was great for autox - I expect the Yaris to be just as good once it is set up.

Anyway, just wanting to say hello and see if there is any problems that I should keep an eye out for. I know these things are quite reliable, but I just want to make sure there are no known problem areas.

The most common issue seems to be a water pump that fails way too soon. Some issues with rust and ABS connectors at the wheels, but that only seems to be in the harsher winter climates.

Ok thanks! I will look for leaks/overheating (its at a BMW dealer, so I dont think they would sell a car that is overheating/leaking, but i will look).

This car was bought in California and was housed in Georgia most of the time (we really dont have much salt on the roads here). The carfax shows an event from Indiana, but I dont think that it was there long. However, I will check for rust.

^^ Not rust in general, but rusting/corrosion of the ABS connectors. That being said - there is a thread on here somewhere with people talking about seeing some small rust spots already. Most of that is likely due to climate and not a failing of the car itself.

I wouldn't worry about anything being wrong....you live where its warm all the time. Water pump seems to be somewhat rare....I've hammered my yaris in auto-x and lapping without any issues (except cooking my brakes at my last lapping day, LOL)

Welcome aboard man, I just recently picked up a '10 Yaris 3-door. It is a 5-speed with manual windows, but with lots of other extras like XM, TPMS, and the 60/40 rear seat. Mine has 96,000 highway miles on it and is averaging 40.6 mile per gallon, plus it still has the original rear tires that don't even look like they've worn at all. Hope you enjoy your car and keep us updated on your Auto-Xing, not sure if I'm going to track mine kinda looking for an '07-'08for that, not as many electronic grannies in those years.

Ok thanks everybody. Ended up not working out on the 2009. I drove all the way up to Augusta (240 miles, almost 5 hours, ONE WAY, of back roads) to get jerked around by the dealership. They tried to say my car was "more base than they were expecting". (It's a Miata TOURING [and they knew this]. there are not options for Navigation/Leather/Powerseats!). Very snobby and horrible dealership.

Anyway, looks like I will probably be picking up a Silver 2012 Yaris L at my local dealership. They are giving me an awesome deal (including $1000 grad cash) that should get me to ~$200 a month. Not quite as low as I wanted to go, but it would be new! :)

EDIT: Just picked it up! :)
