extra speakers ?

i have some questions about our factory stereo:

1. can the head unit support 2 extra speakers?
2. can i just splice my extra speakers into the currently wired rear speakers?
3. will i need more power? i.e. an amp?

my friend gave me his old 6x9s that he never used. each speaker is built into its own box. id like to leave the speakers in the boxes, if at all possible. i just dont know how to install them.

You can.

A) get an aftermarket headunit, install a 4 channel amp, and power those speakers
B) unplug the rear speakers and solder extension speaker wire and run them to the speakers.

Option a will benefit you alot more cuz it will leave you room to upgrade your front speakers with components and hook up a subwoofer if you want extra bass, but it will involve more money since you need to invest in electrical sytem (wiring, new battery, possibly alternator if you want big power) option b is alot cheaper but severely limits you in terms of upgrade options,

Pull up Google and look up Impedance before you begin hooking up speakers.

IIRC, all the stock speakers are 4 Ohm.

If you are going to use an amplifier, look for one that has high level inputs. Those will make your life easier (or should) if keeping the stock radio. You can also look at a processor or more affordably a good quality LOC. I put an MTX REq in my wife's Tacoma years ago and it still works very well.

Hookin up speakers will knock down the load. Unless it works diff on a headunit. I've never seen a headunit rated at 2 ohms.

^ Agreed.

...but...but...whwatdyamean I can't hook up my HU into a 1/2 Ohm load? My friend did...and he made 237 dB from his 6x9s!

Thanks everyone for the input. I went to BestBuy today and picked up the following:
New HeadUnit
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+50...=1218447374174

Replacement front door speakers
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer+...&skuId=3438938

I'm going to uninstall the two factory rear 5.25s and install those previously mentioned 6x9s. Where and how I'm going to mount these boxes is yet to be found hopefully when I remove all the trim Ill find a nice spot to secure them. I'm going to get started with removing all the trim and getting everything setup for tomorrow. Ill do a semi DIY and post pics tomorrow when everything is said and done. Wish me well m8s

Whenever you criticize somebody like that how about going into detail. If not you just come off as a troll.

YarisB. Keep doing your thing man. Everybody is going to have an opinion. Hopefully with reasons.

Am I criticizing anybody?

Stock front speakers are very good in terms of sq, nice flat response throughout the whole range, awesome low end response, high sensitivity (lightweight cone with small air gap). Overall very solid design with superb cast frame.

Same with stock headunit - nice SQ, decent internal amps

.. (sorry for bringing bad news)

Just my 0.02

Yaris B. We usually ask for a bit of info.

Like :

Is this your first install.
Are you looking for Sound Quality or Just louder than stock.
A budget.

You also want to do some research online.
Keywords.

Ohms / Impedance / Load
RMS / Watts
Signal clipping / Distortion

You're not going to understand everything but it's basic knowledge.

So please do some research. From there we can build a foundation and help you a bit more.

So do some homework and report back on Monday !

Now this opinion is somewhat more useful. You put the reason why you don't like the equipment.

i wanted to upgrade sq with a real tight budget. hence everything being on the cheaper side. its not awesome but its better than stock setup imo. everything installed just fine and sounds great. i feel that the new headunit does not supply enough power so i might invest in an amp, funds permitting. as for Tolmach, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. yours just happened to be on the negative side. doesnt bother me, im still going to do what i want to do. thanks for all the advice S7V7N.

I'll fall in line with what S7v7N is saying. Yeah, the equipment isn't the best in the world. We've got to start somewhere though.

I recall my first system. It was in a Geo Metro. A Coustic tape player, a small 25 x 4 Blaupunkt amplifier and a single MTX Blue Thunder subwoofer.

...those were the days...

Now it's travelling all over the country, going to CES, INAC and SBN and competing in sound quality competitions.

Point is, don't let anyone's opinion drag you down. Do what you need to do...and learn something. The latter is a must.

Man, you need not divide people into pos or neg here.. If you ask for advice or post something here, just be prepared to get the feedback. There are other ways to upgrade the stock system on a tight budget - I would probably just add couple decent tweeters to the front woofers and install 165 mm full range drivers in the rear stock locations. Again, this is just my way of doing this based on my experience.

Anyways, I am glad that you like the final result - this is what really matters.
