Is the engine in a 2007 Yaris a interference or non-interference engine?

Probably interference being it's chain-driven. On the other hand I doubt you'll ever have to worry about it.

Why do you wonder? Chain driven or belt driven has nothing to do with it being interference or non-interference as both can be either. Most modern engines are interference, however, I wouldn't worry about it. The yaris is chain driven with no scheduled maintainance.

With 10.5:1 compression its a safe bet to say its interference.

It's interference.

Chain driven engines are more reliable (especially with variable timing setups) and cheaper to maintain than belt driven engines.

Unless the chain breaks at highway speeds....then you're screwed.

Before this I had a '94 geo prism (toyota corrolla). The timing belt had to be changed every 60k miles, and the water pump failed at 60k intervals too.

yeah, my 86 gti had a timing belt. never again will i own a car with a timing belt.

chain driven all the way!

I wouldn't have bought a Yaris if it had a timing belt. Low maintainance was a big selling point for me. Timing belts are a scam IMO. It pisses me off how a car company can design a car with a $500-$600 60,000 mile belt change. Toyota is of course not that expensive as they are the only company to offer flat rate timing belt changes depending on 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. I've owned Mitsubishi (Montero) and Nissan (Pathfinder) vehicles and $700 is not uncommon for a T-belt service. I get angry just thinking about it.

How often do you have to change the chain? and if it breaks are you screwed like you would be if a belt broke?

no timing chain maintenece is listed in the owners manual.

think of the older cars from the 60s and stuff. those engines still run w/ no overhaul because they all have chain-driven cams. unless the chain goes out of tolerence and skips a gear, you are fine. but i cannot see that happening unless you are running 22lbs of boost, or a 200 shot of Nitrous... bboth of which would blow the bottom end before the timing chain broke :)

Never, NO scheduled maintainance. IF it broke, yes, you would be screwed. I have NEVER heard of that happening on a Toyota, however.
