Lightweight Crank Pulley
Hey, I installed my Micro Image lightweight crank pulley this weekend (rough without air tools). Anyway, I’m not feeling much of a difference in performance. If someone had switched it out without me knowing, I don't think I would have noticed.
Before the swap, I had a Greddy Ti-C Axle Back Exhaust and an FS AFE Intake (SRI) on the car. Would that be why I didn't feel a difference? I did unhook the battery and such. Do I need to do anything else? Last edited by axiom; 08-18-2014 at 01:55 PM. |

I did a lightweight crank pulley just recently and noticed a difference. The RPM`s climb at a much quicker rate now. when the car in in neutral and you rev it you should notice that the rpms will shoot up significantly quicker. and when driving it just feels like a lot less effort is required to get up to speed. If I could compare it to anything I think it would feel like the car has gone on a diet and lost some weight.

Hmm, I did the rev thing right after changing it out. I also held both the old and new pulleys and definitely felt the weight difference, but really, the rpms seem to rise the same (maybe a hair faster). Prior to this, I had already thought my little car was pretty spunky, so maybe it's just me. Maybe I was just expecting more than I should have. I've only driven it to work since changing it, I'll see how things go.

To be fair I also did a header and intake at the same time as the pulley. So I can't guage exactly how much the pulley did for the increase I was feeling from everything. But one thing is for sure the car climbed up the rpms significantly quicker.

you will not notice a power gain really as much as the easier revolutions will allow you to reach the power band quicker. it is just the facts of life with such a small power plant.

Driving it again today, I did feel some difference. I find myself naturally shifting up earlier than I used to. I think my next upgrade will be a new header.

I've always been of the belief that a light weight crank pulley really will never lighten the rotating mass enough to ever really make noticable power on any engine. I've installed full pulley kits on some VW cars and the only real improvement was clutch in revs. Which we wanted for making rev match downshifts quicker (autocross), So in that sense yes they work. An experienced mechanic or driver also will not feel less than a 5% change in horsepower typically so for you to feel the difference the pulley made it would need to add about 6 horsepower, which frankly you just wont get. Also all your old pulleys on every accessory still are hefty not to mention the load on all the pulleys still slowing the crank down.
Long story short... there are so many other pieces to the puzzle. |

Yeah its not a huge difference or a horsepower increase feeling. More of a free flow feeling and you nailed it, I think the best advantage to the lightweight crank pulley is rev matching on downshifts. Especially because the yaris runs an electric throttle and the peddle feel just isn't the same as a cable operated throttle body the crank pulley makes the rev match a lot smoother and a lot quicker.

What everyone else is saying. It will be hard to notice the difference of just the crank pulley. Now if you get the entire pulley set, lightweight flywheel and clutch, and lightweight wheels, you will feel the difference.

I am sure am argument could be made that an auto will benefit from it because the engine revs are not always directly matched up to your rate of acceleration thanks to your torque converter. I am only a lowly apprentice mechaninc though and someone could prove me wrong but I really do not think its a worth while mod at all unless you have nothing else left to bolt on.

I have been using the NST lite pulley for almost 7 years and I'm in an automatic. I did all my pulleys (crank, water, then alternator), and my engine revved up quicker, I slowed down quicker, and I had less gear hunting between 3rd and 4th going uphill. Really the huge reduction in gear hunting is well worth it in the auto. My mpg also increased - slightly.
