How do you pronounce Yaris? - Toyota Yaris Forums

Is the yar part pronounced yar as in far, or yar as in hair?

I assume the last pert is is pronounced as iss, and not is.

I say Yar as in Far. And the end is definitely iss.

Toyota named it after the Greek god Charis. So.. yeah. Borrow that pronunciation.

I say Vitz, but if you own the sedan, you've got a Belta... or Vios.

Last weekend at the Houston Auto Show I was looking at the Yaris 428CobraJet posted a picture of on another thread. Someone walked by and said "Oh, there's a Yair-iss". Ugh. IMO, like running a fingernail down a blackboard.For some reason this really bugs me, but even 'media' people make this mistake. Hershey used to post a lot of Mpg-O-Matic videos to Yarisworld. I like the host/guy who runs that site....but when he reviewed the Yaris he called it the "Yair-iss".

Oh well. I was unable to enjoy "The Stand" mini series from a few year ago, because one or some of the characters kept babbling on about going to "Colo ray-do".

. Perhaps I would be less of a thing with me if I heard someone say "Yair-iss" and I knew the person was local to this area. Re San Felipe (a major street in Houston) quite a few locals say "San Fill-ih-pee"....but many are such nice, salt of the earth people...it cushions the blow to my ears

It also baffles me how some people are pronouncing Houston as if there was an H in its name.

Kimona, If I see someone driving a Yaris, I tell then I like your Yaris. However, if they look like your profile photo, I might slip and say "I like Yurass...I mean Yaris."

To confuse the issue even more

, Charis can have a different pronunciation if is someone's name. One of the roommates I had right after college is named Charis. She is half Italian and half Polish. Her dad is Polish...she has a Polish last name. She pronounces her first name 'Shar-eese', but spells it Charis.
