Yaris it too unsafe...?

I saw a girl getting out of a sweet red 4 door Yaris LB today and asked her how she likes the 4 door. She said it was OK but her mom was making her sell it because it was unsafe. I think her mom bought it for her. I was like - "but that test is crazy" and she just shrugged her shoulders. I was like WTF?!

I wouldn't call the test crazy. The Yaris that was tested looked like a Chinese built car with both the roof and floor buckleing, allowing the steering wheel and dash to intrude straight into the drivers space.

You have to remember, before this test the government crash test ratings account for the Yaris stopping it own (very small mass) against a barrior. Sure it holds up well to itself. But the fact is there are far larger cars out there that will win in a head on collision, and 40mph isn't to crazy.

Besides, just because I'd drive it doesn't mean I'd let my inexperienced teen daughter drive it (if I had a teen daughter). I can understand wanting your child to be safe...

Really though head on collisions are one of the rarest one. You are more likely to get tboned so somehow someone on the freeway on your commute to work is going to somehow fly over the medium and aim directly head on into your car? I would think ou are more likely to get struck by lightning than be involved in a head on colission and even if you were in a head on colission i think the chances of you dying are not that high.

Wow, you live in California and presume every road has a median?

There are PLENTY of roads all over that are two lane, no divider, with speed limits well over 40 MPH.

Just keep telling yourself that front end collisions are rare, and even if you do get in one your Yaris will protect you. I suppose it can't hurt to be positive...

I also drive a 3500+ lb steel Jeep and it too will crunch if I hit something (or something hits me) that is a lot larger than it is!

Yes, any small car is going to take the worse of a head-on with a larger vehicle, but if safety was the only consideration in life we'd all drive tanks! And even then, once everyone is driving a tank you'd need a bigger tank to be safe again!

The best safety device in any vehicle is the one behind the steering wheel!

Cheers! M2

You can still say that, but head ons are still the rare-er crashes.

I should have told her to discuss her decision on Yarisworld first. We need more dames on the site.

I feel safe in my yaris.... as safe as I would feel in a car as small as it is.

I've been in a wreck in my yaris before and it hasnt been that bad... but then again I was only going 30mph :p

Well, if mommy is buying her the car, i think the girl should pay as much for gas as possible, so go with a hummer haha. (yea, i'm just being jealous/joking :P)

Damn, I just don't know how I got this far! I had been driving for 20 years before seatbelts became mandatory, I should have been dead! Airbags (even one) are recent, yet I survived, as did all my friends; why ain't we dead??

Mostly because we learned to drive properly... defensively. I see far more young females driving as if they were invincible than guys; are there different rules for girls? Not allowed to yell at them if they do something stupid, just in case they (oh, no!) cry? C'mon, if your daughter gets injured in an accident, just think: accidents take two cars. If she is not paying attention enough to avoid a head-on, she doesn't belong in the driver's seat, and her injuries are just that: her injuries. If you blame the car, then you have some self-analysis to go through.

'Scuse me while I go find check the used tank lots for a bargain...
