What could this be?
I have a 2007 Yaris, 5 speed Manual. Everything was fine until yesturday. I was taking off in 1st from a complete stop, shifting from 1st to 2nd I could hear a "bang" behind me. It did not sound like a back fire as I could feel it directly behind my seat, it felt like it was coming from under the car. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd I could hear it again but not as loud and there was nothing from 3rd to 4th gear. I thought it might be my portable little air compressor that came with the car josling around so I secured it. Still when shifting the sound is there, now just not everytime I shift.I looked under the car, everything appears ok, nothing loose, I thought maybe it might be a spring getting ready to go, but rear suspension appears intact. Any Ideas? Should I take in to the dealer. I bought it used and have another 2 months on the dealer warranty...... ![]() I should clarify too the sound is coming from behind me under the car on the drivers side, it is in the area of the where the spring and shock is located in the very back of the car. Keep in mind that the Yaris clutch is very sensitive, so you'll get that jerking sensation very easily, especially in lower gears. Give it a little more gas and release the clutch a little more slowly.
Also, there's a factory scissor jack under the driver seat. Pop-off the plastic cover and see if it's mounted in place tightly. Hope this helps.

Well I know it isn't in the clutch as the sound is coming from behind me and under the car, the clutch is in the front. I will check the jack though, never dawned on me about that.....ok checked the Jack, and it'd nice and tight and secure....I'm stumped.

Hmm... Well in my last car the exhaust was loosening up and banging a little against the chassis when my tranny was giving out (auto). Not saying it's your tranny acting up, especially since you're shifting yourself, but it could be just a loose exhaust mount moving with the shifts. That's all I really telll ya.
But since you're still under warranty, best to let the dealer decide and take care of it. Let us know how it goes.

Well I feel like a complete moron!!!! I figured out what it was. I had a speaker in the back seat on the floor and everytime I shifted it would hit the frame of the back seat that is near the floor......DUH!!!!!!!!!!
