May 2010 Yaris Sales: Way down

The Yaris did not have a good month in may: Sales were down more than 58% compared to May 2009—the most out of any subcompact sold in the U.S. The good news is it's still the fourth best-selling subcompact in the U.S., selling more than 20,000 vehicles thus far.

1. Versa (47,775)
2. Accent (22,463)
3. Soul (22,208)
4. Yaris (20,577)
5. Fit (19,374)

Not that it matters to me....but wait until gas is back to $4+ per gallon and we'll see what happens.

It's hard to figure out why Yaris sales have slid so sharply.

Possible reasons:

- Gas is holding steady at a relatively low price
- The Yaris is 4 years old but then again so isn't Accent and Versa
- Mediocre car reviews
- Other models can be had for less
- Most people just pay a bit more and jump into the Corolla

I can't believe the Soul has shot up to #3. Although it's placement in this segment is a bit inaccurate. The Soul is slotted more so between the Scion xD and xB rather than the basic sub-compacts. Plus it's tall wagon body style doesn't compete with sub-compact sedans or even Yaris-like hatches. Regardless, I thought it would be more of a niche vehicle, but it has gone full mainstream. It's making Scion sales look pretty bad.

Whens the last time you saw an ad for the Yaris on TV or magazine ad? Toyota seems to depend totally on drive by or on the street advertising for it. Everyone has cutesy/fartsy ads for theirs, not Toyota............

I see even more people driving them in St. Louis now.

I mostly notice the hatchback though I must admit.

Here in the GTA I just keep seeing more and more. Yesterday I stopped at a light with 2 other Yarii.
That said, this morning I was sandwiched between two Venza.
Lot's of Accents here (dirt cheap). Not much Soul. A few Fit but it's likely too pricey to compete in these segment. A Civic is about the same price, is larger, sportier looking and gets similar mileage.

Basically it comes down to bang for buck, with the Accent and Versa you get a lot more that you pay for than on a Yaris or Fit. Most people care more about space and need power windows, ect. I think you pay about 16k for power everything on the Yaris and Fit, where the Accent & Versa are about 14k for power everything.

Well, I've got mine and expect to keep it a long time. How many Yarises they sell now really doesn't concern me. I'm not trying to evangelize a Yaris cult or anything.

it's not just the yaris - it's toyota in general. i read in the paper today that most every automobile manufacturer had double-digit percentage sales increases over may of last year - except toyota whose increase was at 6.7%. due to the 'smear campaign' toyota has been offering incentives, but consumers have a lot of choices out there right now.

That's for sure, at least until the new Yaris comes out.

I'm fully expecting the Fiesta to become #1 virtually right away.

It has the highest mpg, the best interior, very nice styling, and Ford's new top notch quality. It can't lose.

The real question is: "People buy Kia Souls?"

That about sums up my opinion of them.

Well, maybe I'm not typical, but... I really wanted a Fiesta, but it would've cost me about $3K more than the Yaris did, and with Toyota's 0%/60 month deal, it was almost a no-brainer to get the Yaris instead.

The KIA Soul is a lot cuter than the Scion boxes or the Nissan Cube. But that's not saying much for it.
