Ignition

Hi

Last night I started my car to go home from work and I accidentally took the key from the ignition contact and to my knowing the car was still running.

Is that normal and then when I tried to drive home without the key in the ignition it didnt stoped

Did this kind of thing happen to anyone or I'm the first and I was kinda scared because if a theift come he could easily steal my car is there anything I can do or is it normal and I should leave it like that

Is this normal did this ever happen to anyone please let me know

how old is you car, how many miles/km and did you turn it back, or just pull it out?

There was another user on the forum, "trinity performance 4" or a combination of letters similar to that, who had trouble with his ignition switch/clutch switch after 400,000+ miles.

Don't know what came of his request for help, but here it is: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30758

Obvious answer is take it to the dealer and let them figure it out. Probably falls under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty thing. If it didn't happen again I wouldn't worry about it...

The keyswitch has a mechanism that locks the pins when the key is turned to prevent pulling it out in any position except off. I haven't pulled an ignition switch apart to know if this problem is repairable or if you will have to replace the switch (and the keys and lock cylinders) to resolve it.

I don't think that it is a security issue, as you will probably find that you can't insert something other than key and start the car.

I would test it to verify that the switch won't turn unless the key is inserted. If it does not, then you don't have to worry about it being easily stolen. In that case, considering how much of a hassle it would be to change all of the lock cylinders, I would leave it as is.

@ Ctscott
How do you test the switch to make sure that if the key is not inserted it won't start

Either stick the key half way in and try to turn it, or stick a key from another Toyota in and try to turn it.

im guessing he was trying to see if your ignition was.. "loose"

aka - anything could turn it on.

but since it looks like it still requires your key - security wise it doesnt look like your in too much danger.only problem im seeing is that you make sure you turn the key and turn the car off

i think scott was kinda leaning towards the same thing

^Exactly. Basically no one can easily steal your car, so you are fine from a security standpoint.

It's not normal, but it really won't hurt anything.
