2 questions regarding long term reliability of the yaris
1. has anyone on this board ever had to rebuild their automatic transmission? If so, what was the mileage?
2. Has anyone had to replace their air conditioner? If so, whit was the mileage? Just trying to get an idea of how long these major repair items last. Thanks |

I have only heard of two AT on here needing to be replaced. One that was likely damaged when the car was in an accident and needed to be replaced in the 40K range and the second I don't remember the details on, but it sounded like it was potentially a service mistake.
As for the AC compressor, that is a much trickier one, as it will likely be an effect of usage and belt over-tightening. There have been quite a few posts about people looking for replacement compressors or for info on how to replace the bearings. Hopefully some of them will respond with mileage and usage info.

With how low the demand is for trannys on this platform if you have an issue with yours you would be better to buy a used one. It would be much cheaper than a rebuild for sure unless you had performance reasons to do so.

My 01 echo (previous "yaris") was still using factory Freon when it was totaled in 2010 with 318,000 miles. The echo was a manual trans car, so no reliability info on the automatic trans from me.

What do you mean "replace air conditioner"? There are several components. Regardless, it would be rare for any of them to fail

I am at 125,000 miles and no complaints on my AC. I refuse to own cars that shift themselves, so I can't give you feedback on that aspect.

I know Trini_per4mance's example with 507,000 miles or so has his AC still working just fine after that many miles in Florida heat. No recharge or anything. Pretty amazing.

Yeah, his example pretty much shows how durable the Yaris AC can be in a hot climate....the number of miles he has driven plus the only tropical climate in the contiguous 48. Even venturing north of his metro (or north of Naples, etc. on the other coast), he's still in the sub-tropical climate that so many Texans live in. Some of my miles (of course my total only about half of his) have been in the SF Bay Area and also on trips around the U.S. (so not the mileage exposure to heat that trini's car has performed so well through). I have not had to tend to anything re the AC (same as Trini).
