That is corrosion. It typically occurs because of acid leakage from battery. Use a battery terminal cleaning tool (which is a set of male and female brushes to clean the battery post and the terminal) or sandpaper. A mix of baking soda and water rubbed on there during the cleaning will also neutralize any residual acid.

It seems like every battery I get this happens to, it never happens to the other 3 cars at my house. Is this just a common issue with our cars, or just a common issue with mine? I live in a hot climate as well, not sure if that plays into it at all.

battery washer
Clean your terminals as mentioned before and then install these. They should help. http://www.amazon.com/989-Anti-Corro.../dp/B000CQFS0O
You can get them at any auto supply including Wal-Mart. You can also get dielectric grease also which helps also. I use this on bulbs so they don't lockup due to corrosion. good luck. http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-22058...lectric+grease |

I haven't seen corrosion on any of my Yaris. It may be the fact that you are purchasing non-sealed liquid electrolyte batteries, which are more prone to boiling over in hot climates. It also may not be a bad idea to have your alternator tested to verify that its internal voltage regulator is working properly. If it is putting out too high of a voltage (over 14.1 volts) it may be causing the batteries to boil over as well.
