2008 Yaris passes 340,000 miles
Just went passed 340,000 miles and my 2008 Yaris just keeps doing the now 160 mile commute most days of the week from east of Asheville, NC to Charlotte. Other than a few weird noises now and some old age (for a second she will idle low when I turn on the ac or hit the brakes - I think it is early signs of alzheimers in the computer) it keeps on going. Engine sounds healthy and I keep my fingers crossed with the auto tranny. So I am wondering if the new Yaris's are still made just about the same as the 2008 or has there been some major changes? I would buy another.......if it is as good as the 2008

After a few hits by raccoon's and deer and the clear coat giving way she is showing her miles. I use it like a pick-up truck and have had lumber hanging way too far out the passenger window from time to time. 8 foot lumber fits fine if you put the rear seat down and angle it towards the front. Put file cabinets in it too, with a little imagination and the back seat down you can stuff more than you think in the car. When I bought it new I put my wife and two girls in it and drove down to Florida for a wedding even with all their clothes in the very back. The girls in the back said it was more comfortable than our 4 door jeep. Glad to know they haven't changed the core stuff as I will buy another but not until I get this one broken in

Glad to hear your Yaris has served you so well. I wonder if cleaning the throttle body (a common thing to do) will fix your drop of idle when braking or turning on the ac?
I think your LONG commute every day is a good reason for successfully racking up the miles. My 09 is just the opposite. Only 44k after 7 years and I hope this will be my last car.

I am sure the long commute has helped it out. On the other hand though it spent 6+ years negotiating probably the steepest worst gravel road in the county climbing about 1800 feet in 3.8 miles with a 25% slope in one section up and down each day. The gravel dust would get really bad in the summer. This same road killed two transmissions in my 2008 Jeep JK which thankfully were under warranty. The transmissions would overheat. Jeep finally put a heavy duty transmission cooler in for free. I moved from there about 2 years ago so the Yaris got a little retirement relief

Care to share your maintenance protocol? You're doing something right :) Congrats on the mileage. I look forward to you hitting 500k!

I bought the car new in 2008 ($13,000.00 including taxes, tag, title, etc.). It is a base model but evidently there is one even cheaper. I do my own oil changes with Castrol GTX oil. I have used fram filters but would not do so if not for the fact I do an oil change every 5 weeks or so. Oil stays very clean between changes. Coolant, plugs, etc I just follow the maintenance schedule in the manual. The transmission pan has never been off the vehicle. I have done one pan dump of fluid using the drain plug and refilling with factory fluid in the precise amount drained. Yea I should probably be shot but at this mileage I may do more harm than good now.
Things I have replaced: Alternator Water Pump Evap cannister. This is a sore spot. I had Toyota look at it and they said yea its bad and we have a fix and for $1200.00 we can give you a new canister and the fix (filler neck). I put a used one on which got me through inspection but it coded again shortly afterwards. Oh and I do not overfill with gas. I also cannot put gas in at full speed and haven't been able to in awhile. It does not code right away so I can usually get it through inspection each year....so far. So in some ways I am the poster child of how not to keep your Toyota going but that just goes to show you the cars are bullet proof. I take it easy on the ole girl as she has served me well |

I suspect the evap cannister had nothing to do with the code. I suspect had you put the one from Toyota on the result would have been the same.
Get the code read at autozone and tell us what it is and we'll help you figure out whats really wrong.

I found this right up on the forum which is probably the same issue I have. I will try the fix on page 2 and see if that helps. Thanks.
