mediocre reviews

To tell the truth, I knew absolutely nothing about the Yaris until yesterday. I went to my brother's dealership and I told the salesman I wanted an economical car that was safe and got good gas mileage. Every negative review I have read since yesterday has been primarily for cosmetic reasons. The controls are in the center of the dash, the rear seats are not comfortable for tall people, the front of the car is stark, stuff like that. I think the Yaris is comporable to the 1998 Honda Civic I just got rid of. If my brother was working at the Honda dealership I might have bought another Honda. For now I think the Yaris is a very good choice.

I agree. The Yaris is very underrated. The center console may be "annoying" for someone who is test driving it for a review, but it is quite easy to get used to.

For whatever reason the auto press has always hated on the Yaris. Luckily when doing my research I paid most attention to what actual owners thought of their Yarii. Glad I did-it's an amazing little car for the money.

I think alot of the reviewers don't get or see the beauty in the simplicity of it's design. everything you need is in the center of the car's dash. They get all wrapped up in "where are the bells and whistles?' and don't see the car's basic design. I have never been happier with a new car.

Basically, the Yaris has everything I need in a car. Does it have everything I want? Probably not, but I'm happier having a car that can do well everything I need as opposed to a car where I'd have to compromise some of the qualities I need in order to have something I want.

Hope I didn't get too philosophical over there

O sry. I thought you had tons of money to spend on a car, instead of a Yaris.

I don't go by what the "professionals" say as I know they are all a bunch of pampered whiners who try to find things wrong about a car instead of focusing on what's right about it!

Instead, I went and read all the remarks on Yahoo Autos from people that actually bought and owned the car (not just borrowed one for a few days). I was amazed at all the positive reviews compared to the negative press articles; but these were people who spent their own hard-earned money on the car and lived with it on a daily basis. These were real-world testimonies as compared to some journalists impressions on a closed course or track. I put a lot more faith and emphasis on what the owners say about a car, and very little on what I see in a magazine or some online journal.

However, overall I honestly don’t care what others think about the Yaris, what matters is what I think about mine and I will tell you that after a year and a half of ownership I am still in love with the car! I know its plusses and its limitations, and I don’t expect it to do anything it wasn’t designed to do. But just this past Saturday we did a 350+ mile trip in my hatchback and not only was it fun to drive but comfortable as well. Sure, it was a little more noisier than my Mom’s Mercedes E350; but considering the difference in price I still feel I got more car for my money…

Cheers! M2

the yaris is a boring car, toyota doesnt make interesting cars.

the seats are flat, the center speedo is annoying, and the oem paint sucks

but its good on gas, cheap to maintain, and is fun when modified.

For the price, the Yaris is a very good deal. Good MPG, good engine, center console will take about 10 minutes to get used to. Seats are just as comfortable as my wife's $30k Subaru. Leave the drink holders at chest high and not in some area that you have to turn your body/head to reach. AUX port for the IPOD/MP3 player. Back seats come down. I have the "S" so I have power locks/rims/sporty look. Most folks think it is a hybrid.

Paint is good but is garage kept. Just changed tires at 40k which is pretty good for OEM tires on a "cheap" car.

your seats don't suck because you have an "S" model

lots of other items are your car are better than the base model...like fold-flat, split-fold seats

Our two 2009 base model sedans have the 60/40 seats. Same as the 2007 "S" we also have. Only differences I can see are cosmetic body stuff, wheels, different upholstery and instrument background colors on the "S." And fog lamps. Seats are the same.

in canada, non-RS models (3dr and 5dr only) didnt have split-fold rear seats until 2009 or 2010 MY, so 06-08 or 09 had a rear bench, which doesnt fold flat

we also got 14" wheels/tires as the base

S/RS model hatchbacks have black interiors and ceiling, sport seat fabric, sport bolstered seats, amber gauge cluster, black center cluster, chrome handles insdie, leather wheel and shift knob, fog lights, RS/S badging, side skirts (and for 08+ front and rear lip kit as well), aluminum wheels, ABS, and i think in '10 traction control, heated mirrors

other stuff ive likely missed...

sedan S, i can't speak for

I don't pay any attention to hatchbacks. No idea what they've got.

Most of the idiots who test drive these cars (I know they are idiots because I see them driving around all the time...Motor Trend, etc is only 15 minutes from me) go test drive a $100,000 Jaguar or Mercedes, then hop in a Yaris to take it for a spin. Obviously the car is going to feel lackluster compared to what they just drove! Or sorry, it's interior isn't as good as the BMW they have as a daily driver.
