Headlights harness
??? for all the electrical genius. Do you have to upgrade your headlight wiring harness when you buy the standard 60/55 watt bulbs. I was looking into getting into new headlights and was on Racing Labs site and noticed they had a headlight upgrade harness. I figured that was used if you were rockin like the 100/90 watt bulbs. Is my assumption correct that you only need to upgrade the harness when you go above the 60/55 watt rating no matter what the bulb is?

I do not see any reason to upgrade

An upgraded harness would likely give you better performance even with the stock bulbs.

Even just with one of these?
http://www.racinglab.com/kyoplheduwih4.html It just looks like it's a thicker gauge wire. I am new to the game and dont want to fry my harness like I did in my truck. Well those were 90/100 watt bulbs on the stock harness. I figured if you stayed with the 60/55 watt draw you were ok. what exactly does the harness do, and can these be found at like Autozone?? |

No - that would be a waste of money if you're just running stock wattage bulbs. They've got a lot of nerve advertising that as a "harness". A true harness uses a relay and replaces the stock wiring with heavier gauge wire straight from the battery. |

Here's what a harness looks like (shamelessly stolen from http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6612, removed upon request):

One thing that isn't noted on Violin's diagram but is visible is the fuse holder. If you're worried about drawing more current though the stock wiring that you have to get a harness coming straight off the battery terminals DEFINITELY get a fuse on there. Better that the fuse pops than you melt any wiring at all.
It makes a lot more sense to use a harness like that on HIDs where you're worried about current spikes from the igniters, though.

Ya I just seen those harnesses on racinglab.com and of course they had it as a recommendation at the bottom when I was looking up stock 55/60 watt bulbs. Their explaination for the use of the harness waas that it protects from the "heat" generated from a bulb. I just wanted something bright and sense I heard that headlights fade over time I was wondering if I should get another set of Piaa's like I have or was wondering what all was out there that is in the same realm of the 55/60 watts. I did use a higher wattage set on my truck and didnt know any better 5 years ago and melted the tip of the connector off. I have seen the Osram Silverstars from Europe, but I was wondering why they were so cheap, and was thinking they didnt last very long. The Sylvania Ultras wont come out till the Fall is what I was told or I would get those.
