changing oil

so its time for me to do my first oil change on my 2010 yaris what kinda oil should i be using what weight and is it synthetic or regular or synthetic blend its just my daily driver for now so not looking for better performance i did buy the trd oil filter though for shits and giggles

if you are not looking for anything special, use the oil specified in your owners manual.

I run mobile 1 or penzoil plat or what ever syn is on sale for 6k no issues.

I really recommend sticking with regular dino oil until you hit 10000km's for break-in purposes.

If you're not looking for anything special, follow your owners manual. If that's not good enough, spend what you can afford on whatever oil.

I used Toyota 5w30 for the first two changes, then switched to Penzoil Platinum full synthetic for the third.

I watch the ad's at the local auto part store. Sometimes with rebate you can get oil for $.99 - 1.50/ quart. I am using Castrol GTX 5w30. Beware on the first oil change that the factory over tightened the oil filter.

I'm using Neo Synthetic, and its burning the oil. I'm about to run out of oil in my car.

I run fully synthetic 5w20.

I was running 5w30 until I saw that service bulletin from Toyota saying that 5w20 was safe for our motors and would slightly improve mileage. (like 1 or 2 MPG)

I might also add that when I bought the car I asked what oil type they were using in it and I was told they use full synthetic for everything they had on the lot, so Im not sure what the deal is with the break in period. I was led to believe that newer cars dont have a problem with the synthetic, and that its only in older cars that you have to watch out for problems when using it, but Im no expert so I could be misinformed... if all else fails, call the dealer ship and see what they say.

Has anyone heard if this is true?

Once you change over to Synthetic Oil, you can't go back to Dino. You need to stick with it. Changing back could now hurt your engine?

I would like to change to synthetic @ around 15,000 miles... is this smart?

If you stick to name brands, it shouldn't be a problem. What is important is that you change oil as recommended. There are a lot of differing opinions on maintenance and type of oil. In the end, it is smart to follow Toyota's recommendations.

Not true.
The oil companies want you to believe that so you will buy more expensive "synthetic" oil forever. The metal parts in your engine do not absorb oil like a sponge.
There is endless reading about oil in every automotive forum. I read that "synthetic" oil really isn't even synthetic. It is made with dino oil.

Absolutely not recommending anyone follow this schedule but, I've been running the BMW brand synthetic in my Nissan pickup for years now. Had the truck for 9 years, my daily driver until about a month ago. I changed the oil and filter once a year weather it needed it or not, and topped off as necessary. Truck still runs just dandy with 160,000ish miles on it. Think I'll stick with the BMW synthetic after a couple conventional oil changes on the new Yaris. I'll probably tighten up the interval at which I change it though.

It's fairly inexpensive compared to other synthetics too.

I'll add my two cents for kicks. It's a matter or economics, how much do you want to spend on a quart of oil? You'll have to buy 4 since it takes 3.5 to fill it or at least mine does. If you're under warranty it's best to stick with 5w-30 and 5000 mile changes per Toyotas. I'm running Redline which is $10/qt and really notice zero difference from when I was running $2.50 on sale conventional. But I'm a car nut and don't mind the expense. Everything I've read is that all oils are good no matter what you choose, but change it as it does get dirty every 3000-5000 miles. Some will say that's too early, but even the long term oil runners say change the filter-well I might as well do the oil too if I'm going to go to that much trouble I say.

Thats the thing with the yaris... you can remove the oil filter without having to drain your oil. You lose somewhere between a cup to a pint of oil, that is it. unscrew filter, a tiny stream pours out, put new filter in, put a cup or two of oil back in, and start her up. The longest part of the job is the time it takes to jack up the car.
