Pre-purchase, bad weather ability

I would like my next car to be a Yaris. I test drove one this past Thrusday to make sure the center gauge cluster didn't drive me nuts-it didn't.
My plan is to get a 2010 certified used. I want the Star Safety System with a manual transmission.

My question is, how does the Yaris do in snow? I live in NE Wisconsin and have used snow tire on my Corolla the past 5 years between late Nov-April.
I would buy snow tires for the Yaris too, but have also thought about getting a Suzuki SX4 AWD.

I figure Yaris would be no worse than the Corolla especially given the snow tires. Plus it has traction control, but I don't know if that would make much difference.

I have an '09 manual HB, and last winter in the West MI snow wasn't bad at all. There was one morning that I tried to drive through about 6" of dense snow/slush and got stuck for a moment, but the overall handling on the all-weather tires was fine.

that's what I woud do, buy snow tires.

I was thinking (given same factors) what would have better traction for the snow:

An AWD car with All-Season tires
or
A FWD with seasonal Snow tires
