Amatuer Radio License

I'm going for my HAM on the 19th. I've been doing the tests on this site non-stop.

http://www.qrz.com/xtest2.html?

I can get anywhere from a 70-89, usually about a 78.

I hope I can pass, because I pulled the radio out of my car and it is too quiet. I want to get a YAESU FT-7800R. This site has it, plus the remote head kit free, for $239.00 + free shipping. Pretty damn good deal, but it only lasts until the 29th!

http://www.gigaparts.com/store.php?a...u=ZYS-FT-7800R

I think I want to get into using amateur satellites to contact all 50 states or something.

Where are the rest of the HAMs at?

CB radio's were too big to reasonably fit in the yaris anywhere - any good ones at least. HAM radio's are really small, more powerful, regulated by the FCC, and just overall more interesting. I can even broadcast television with my license if I want. There are so many things you can do. I just thought it would be interesting to get into a new hobby.

Smart move.

Check out HRO http://www.hamradio.com/ which is a great source of equipment. I have my license and 2 icom units ....... one mobile (not installed) and a T90A triband hand held.

If you are going to take the test cold? Get the study guide..... it is worth the money....... ask around and other HAM's will help. I took classes for free.

http://www.eham.net/

Get a 2M for the car and you will have plenty of power and with the repeaters you will be shocked.

I have an FCC General Radiotelephone with Ship's Radar, means I can work on commercial and scientific band stuff.

Never got into the Ham scene. I hope that you enjoy it. Used to be that you needed to transmit and receive Morse code. That ended a few years ago.

I took the Tech test once in the site you posted above, got an 80 percent on it. I'm a bit rusty...

Wow, HRO has the radio I want for 216 + shipping. Maybe I will swing by there... haha.

Gene, do you know morse? I was thinking about trying to learn later on. I downloaded a program that did some method. I forget which one. It would bassically play a letter for you, like Q, until you memorized it, then it would just keep adding letters. I just don't think I have the head for it. The beeps get lost and garbled up to me.

I would not steer you wrong. HRO and the other link I sent are great places. You do not need morse but if you want to learn it...... I am sure HRO has the learning tools for sale...... I would suggest you but a Key.

I stay away from the HRO store because I would not trust myself with my wallet.

LoL, shop with your eyes!

A local HAM, and long time friend of my dad, has all the morse code tools, tapes, keys, etc. So if I do feel like learning, he would let me borrow them. He has an insane shack at his house. Big ass yagi, all sorts of tools on his computer (that his radio is hooked up to). He can track sun spots, the atmosphere, etc. and find out where to attempt transmitting to and how much power to use. It's just crazy.

Did you ever post pics of your ham radio installation and the dual antennas you were
talking about last year? I've been away from the forum for a while, and haven't found
it by searching.

Have you gotten into the D-Star movement? It's kind of fun.
