Had my brakes done....now handbrake is harder to pull.

So I just picked up my car from the shop. I had my front disc brakes serviced because my brakes were squealing louder than a pig seeing how bacon is prepared. But I noticed as I parked my car, the handbrake takes alot more effort to lift up. Did my mechanic tighten it for good reason? Also, what is the proper procedure for lifting the handbrake? Do you press the button and then lift, and let go? Or do you just lift, while hearing the clicking noise and let go?
