How to increase MPG

I have a 2007 hatchback with a manual transmission. I've read about people getting 40+mpg and mine consistently stays around 30-32. I have an aftermarket headunit (Pioneer) and two 12" subs (Eye Candy) in the trunk, which I would assume has a slight effect on mpg since it takes more power. I don't drive aggressively and I try to shift as efficiently as possible, and yet I'm still stuck around the 30mpg mark. How can I increase my mpg? My tired pressure is good, I recently changed my oil, and everything else is in perfect working order. Barely ever use the AC/heater as well.

I assume, where you live it is relatively flat, so hilly drving wouldnt be an issue. Some of the things guys do for better mileage. Tire pressure set around 40 PSI, shift at 2500 rpm or less. Keep speeds at 65 or less, as little idleing as possible. Some guys shut it off at stoplights. Granny it! drive like you have an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. I have an automatic sedan and I usually get 38 to 41 back and forth to work. But its75% highway.

Do you have an Ecometer or Scangauge? I have an Ecometer and it visually helps me to keep my RPMs down and still drive the same speed....even at high speeds.

Also, are you coasting when you are going to stop? You can save a lot of gas by letting up on the gas and coasting to a stop. With a lot of practice over usual terrain, you can get very good at coasting and save a lot of gas. I would bet that in urban terrain, you can save anywhere from 5 to 7 MPG by coasting.
