No Oil Checking - Common Seriously ?

Hi, I recently went to the dealer as I just bought a 2012 Yaris, it is nice, I got some nice rims on it :) (I was going to buy the Scion IQ but you can't put no one in the back) I asked if I needed Engine Oil and Coolant the dealer who sold me the car told me no. I also asked if I need to check the oil stick also a no. Is he pulling some wool over my eyes that will cost me in the future or do I literally not have to worry ? When do I need to add engine oil, does the car literally tell me ? I did get a minor scratch on the hood of the car probably due to a rock hitting it, I had to buy a genuine toyota stick, it covered it up, but you can still see it up close where it was scratched, arrgh.
