When for First Oil Change?

When did you all do your first oil change. I know, I know, the book and the dealers say not until 5,000 miles.

But did anyone do it before then or does anyone have an opinion about doing it at 1,000 miles (even on these new modern cars) to get any metal bits out that may have happened during break-in driving?

Can it hurt anything or cause any problems (other than the ol' wallet if I were to pay for it myself and then get the free 5000 mile one) in the engine, engine seals or anything at all if I did it at 1,000 miles anyway?

Would like to see some opinions on the 2012-2013 owners. Did it change the way it drove/sounds/smoothness on the road?

Just curious. I am sitting at 1,280 miles right now.

Thanks,

O.

I'm sure you can't do any damage by changing your oil early. Personally, I've never changed the oil earlier than the manual states and haven't had a problem.

I go with the 6 mo. or 5k rule from the date the car was manufactured on first oil change of a new car.

I am about to hit 2K myself.
I also am considering going ahead and doing the oil change now.
Then again at the 5K interval.

I Changed Mine At 1500 Miles

I changed mine out at 1,500 miles with 4 quarts of QSUD 5W-30 (Quaker State Ultimate Durability) & a Purolator Classic filter. Won't hurt it at all & it is EXTREMELY easy to do. Will get the 5,000 mile oil change & tire rotation at the dealer (free) when it hits the 5 grand mile mark. 2013 Yaris L Auto. here, just about to hit the 2,300 mile mark. Plan on keeping this car for the rest of my life, so will probably do an oil change every 6 months as the years go by. Will probably put on between 8,000 & 8,500 miles a year on it, as I have gone 2,000 miles in the last 3 months since I've owned it. Driving habits are pretty steady here... Will be less if I decide to hang-up the job and retire in a few years. Guess I'm old school..felt it was better to get rid of the factory fill oil and have some piece of mind.
Also, Build date on the car was 9/2012 so the oil was in it for over 1/2 a year...
Been getting into the BITOG website lately - (Bob is the oil guy)

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Wow, there are some hard-core oil dudes there! Makes for some VERY interesting reading.
What I have realized, just CHANGE your cars OIL! (& Filter) Whether you use a conventional oil and do 3000-6000 change intervals or use a super duper synthetic oil and do 6000-15,000 mile change intervals - change the oil on it and use a decent filter. Fluids & filters are very important to keep clean...you're just strangling your car by its throat if you let them get all nasty & dirty.

yougojay, Toyota would have done the first oil change in the 2 year 25k mile free service plan if the car was at least 6 months old regardless of the mileage .

I did my first oil change at 1500 miles and then every 5000 miles after that. Just during the first 10 thousand miles of the vehicle just use regular engine oil not fully synthetic. That way it helps the engine break in better.

I guess I'm just lucky. I didn't do my first oil/filter change until 10,002 miles. I bought my Yaris while I was on a long trip. I hit 10,002 miles on my 54th day of ownership. That oil change location (a Toyota dealer) is in CA and I purchased my Yaris in RI. My Yaris had 120 miles on it when I bought it (driven between the 2 dealerships the owners had at that time). IIRC (the exact number is on Kal-El's 'repair/ maintenance log' thread) I've done 15 oil/filter changes overall. All dino, no synthetic. I had my plugs changed once (at a Toyota Dealer) at about 208k miles. They looked for things to suggest to me to do and couldn't find anything (except the air filter, which I had ready to put in myself later that day). They said my my engine was clean, running well (with the new plugs) and in great shape .

Thanks Ron - Didn't realize that - Oil was clean, just aching to work on this car. I'll take the car in to the dealer for its 5,000 mile/6 month oil change/tire rotation - doubt there is much they can suggest for me to have done on the car at that low of mileage... we'll see what kind of recieption I get when I bring it in - I do want to talk to my sales guy again...actually a bit surprised he didn't call awhile after the sale. Yet, all the people that work there are probably used to NOT seeing the cars back for warranty service

Actually there is very little maintenance except oil changes and filters, fluid levels and way down the road maybe antifreeze, trans fluid.
The yaris is designed for low maintenance guess thats why there are so many of them sold in the Carribian islands and third world countries.

Yes, I've read all (probably!) of the posts here...seems like this car gets along great by a routine maintenance of filters & fluids. I am seriously enthralled, entranced & enamored with & by this car.

I picked mine up on Tuesday. They told me for the first one, 3 months or 3000km, whichever one comes first.

I had mine at 5015, which was pretty darned close to the 5000 mile recommended oil change interval. Of course, I took advantage of the free oil change at my local Toyota dealership. As as side note, my :Maintenance Needed" light lit up on the way to the dealership.

At what mileage did your maintenance light come on? I've never recorded it, but I think mine might come on ~200 miles before I hit 5,000.

Update: Went on and did it at 1,522

So I went ahead and did the deed. My dealer is really cool. The foreman was giving me some crap (with a smile and a laugh) for changing it early...(even though he just changed the oil on his new Scion FRS at 5K...does not call for it until 10K).

My favorite Tech let me hang with him while he changed it. Low and behold, there were metal dust like particles in the oil as it was draining out into the pan reflecting back against his flashlight. Then the filter: more dust particles and a couple of stringy metal pieces.

I am glad I did it. The car feels smoother and quieter. It feels happier accelerating and the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness factor) I was experiencing between 60-64 mph has vanished. Smooth now throughout the rev and mph range.

Happy now.

Great to know. Mine is at 2,100 miles and I think I'll experience the same thing you are by changing the oil early. ^^.
