Synthetic Oil For Yaris

Hello,
does anyone know why Toyota does not recomend synthetic oil in the 2012 yaris.
Amsoil has it on thier list of approved cars that will use it.
Thanks

If you want to use it go ahead! Probably half of all Yaris owners use synthetic oil.

Its like they dont "approve" of Pennzoil, Mobile, sear oils etc. You just use them!

Now for my synthetic oil sermon!

DONT use synthetic oil! It was designed for use in turbine (jet) engines. Operating temperature run at 500 degrees in those. Oil temps in piston engine around 125. A bunch of promotion types got together and said "I bet we could sell this stuff to consumers! We could hype it and MAKE A FORTUNE! We'll say it lasts longer, improves gas mileage, makes the engine last 250,000 miles and charge TWICE AS MUCH for it!"

But the fact is its the additives that wear out in oil and they are the same, synthetic or regular. I drove my Yaris 5200 miles to Alaska using regular oil. Synthetic on the way back. Didnt improve mpg at all. Your engine will outlast the rest of the car with regular oil changes no matter what.

So if you want to fund somebody elses (admittedly hipper) lifestyle, if you want to be a tool of others go ahead and use synthetic oil.

It's fine . All 0w-20s' that are used in many cars are synthetic . Thus won't harm a thing . Shell , Pennzoil , Mobil and other manufacturers of synthetics can be purchased for $4.50 a quart or less . Go to D.I.Y. for some sales . If you're not going to use a syn , the Pennzoil conventional ( Yellow Bottle or known as P.Y.B. ) is a good choice .

And the wheels on the bus go round and round....

As long as it meets API standards you can use either conventional or synthetic. There are avid proponents for both. Some folks say that the 1nz and its mated C50 or auto trans are not high performance enough to warrant synthetic. Any internal combustion engine or device that uses a lubricant can benefit from synthetic and you are also helping in a small way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

A majority of my time is on the highway. With conventional oil, I noticed a lot of upper end engine noise when I would exit the highway and drive on the surface streets. The noise was about the same if the oil was new or due to be changed. Since switching to synthetic, the valve clatter is almost gone. Is this a good thing or not?! I don't know, but not hearing metal parts clatter around gives me some amount of peace of mind, even if it is false.

Synthetic haters, going to hate!

I'll tell you a little story about synthetic oil. I bought a 85 Toyota 4x4 PU new in 86. I ran Mobil1 10/30 from the first oil change and changed it once per year, with a filter change every 6 months, along with a top off.

At 280,000. miles I pulled the head, as to install some oversized valves and a TRD cam. When I called the machinist to see if the head had any issues, the machinist asked, are you one of the guys that only runs synthetic oil? I replied yes, how did you know? He replied, Every time I get an engine/head in for repair, I can tell when it's had a diet of synthetic oil, as it has little to no wear, and is almost always very clean.

That pretty much sold me on synthetic oil.
