Guess that tune!
First of all we have the countdown to the tune and dyno runs for the 2014 Build of Tiamat for the Loring Timing Association (LTA) Land Speed Runs (LSR) which will occur from the 18th-20th of July 2014. To make things a little interesting and fun I have put up a countdown timer which ends on the 16th of May 2014 @ 1300 hours which is when my tune/dyno is to commence.
Tiamat's 2014 Build Tune/Dyno Since this is a new build with a new turbo setup, fuel system, the works I thought that it would be fun to set up a contest. :thumb: Two tunes will be performed: 1) Street tune with 91/93 octane fuel 2) Racing tune with higher boost, different spark plugs, and VP C16 racing fuel Rules are simple: 1) Two Guesses per user ID (Per tune!) as new information will be posted going up to Tuesday or Wednesday 2) This is a guess at both Horsepower and Torque 3) The closet guess regardless of being over will win 3) Due to #2 of course no two guesses can be identical. You may have either an identical HP or TQ as another guess however one of the other will need to be different. EXAMPLE: User A guess; 320/260 User B; 320/280 Let's have some fun with this! To reference the build and what details are being released please check out my thread. I will be adding more information of course as the build wraps up by Tuesday/Wednesday: Team Tiamat Racing's 2014 LSR Season Build ![]() ![]() ![]() ==========================================

For now we only have the street tune base. Currently tuned at roughly 250/235 at 15.5psi of boost. As for the dyno day it was a love/hate relationship. We ran into several issues that were all small, but time consuming. The worst being that the baffle in my cat snapped in half vertically in the middle of the cat causing the rear section of it to not only twist, but also pivot. It clogged/restricted my exhaust and since it was welded directly to the downpipe it wasn't allowing boost to build past 9-10psi for most of the time that I was there. When we looked at it initially it appeared to be fine, but apparently had rotated. At that point it hadn't pivoted. Then it must have pivoted in the next pull or two because as pulls continued we began to lose boost. A 2 hour tuning session turned into 9 hours.
We did identify that the stock TB at only 54mm is a heftly restriction. We are at least assuming it because once I get over 120mph the acceleration seems to really slow. We figure that the turbo isn't getting fed enough air for longer hauls which of course is what I do with Land Speed. 1/4 I would be gravy as long as the tranny holds up. We didn't get to the motor mounts yet either. Just ran out of time before my tune date. GSD gets hammered on dyno work from March to September. The owner did guarantee me that if I can get the car ready for a genuine race tune then he would find a way to squeeze me in. I did get one video of the base pulls once we were able to get going on them. I only did the one video because I found out that my Canon IS has seem better days and just isn't taking solid pics/videos anymore. This video was during an adjustment pull on the way to the current tune: 05-16-2014 Dyno Pull

250/235 must be one heck of a fun go kart to drive, were these numbers with the destroyed cat choking your turbo? Does she have more in her on a pump gas tune or is the 15.5psi about the limit?
Can't wait to see what you'll put down on race gas, its going to be a rocket! |

The TB is interesting to me. I have a bored out 57mm TB and I'm at 20lbs of boost. The only things holding me back are fuel and the head. I'll throw in a Walbro 416 into my old stock canister with a feed and return. I have a 255 with a feed and return, no bottleneck, and a rewired pump (higher Voltage).
I like how they have the love reporting set up for dyno runs! That is nice...so that you're not floating around the dyno when it's in operation.

This tune is great for the street already honestly. With how the EFR reacts I can easily have smooth acceleration or hit it hard and launch quickly. In hindsight I am almost wishing that I went with the 62 rather than the 67. Only time will tell. IAT temps were sitting right around 90° which was good to see. Also the temps showing between the stock coolant sensor and the gauge sensor on the upper egress piping stayed consistently within 1-3° degrees of each other. By the time I left Friday it was actually going on 10pm. The tuner skipped out on family time for me when most other folks would have buttoned up the shop well before then, but that is one of the reasons why I go to them. I felt pretty bad to be honest, but we had attempted to dianose the boost issues all afternoon. Their dedication to getting the job done. We are still tweaking the tune as the days go on even. He will connect to me remotely and check out the logs too. Perhaps as time goes on we will turn the boost up more, but I am already enjoying it where it is at. Not to mention what could happen to the stock transmission. I don't mind putting another one in, but would prefer to not have to before the Main Event. Another thing to remember is that psi alone doesn't equate to power. May have to be concerned about seals/gaskets too especially running over 6k rpm for long as do. sent from my m-o-b-i-l-e

No these are the numbers now. We were only able to make 2 pulls prior to the clogging issue. Those were at 10psi roughly and had made around 212/204.

Those are good numbers. I am surprised you are not running the corolla TB I am running it with my turbo set up and it made a huge difference now I can cruise around town in 5th gear at 35mph and still able to pick up speed pretty well without downshifting.

Why are you almost wishing you would get the 62 over the 67? Isn't the 10 more lbs of air the 67 provides suit your land speed goals better? You mentioned your transmission, did you have one pop yet under the stress you put them through? If so, what failed?
In your build thread i didn't see any valve spring upgrade, are you using stock springs with a regrind cam? When do you stop making power(what RPM) with your 67? Any chance you could do some street driving videos with your new setup? Purely for our enjoyment of course lol |

The 67 BARELY fits. I have the BC valve spring kit from MI. I am on my 2nd trans, but that was more from overly aggressive driving previously. I have had much better luck with this second one. Still making solid power over 6k, but it starts to drop mid 6k. The peak with the EFR on my build however seems to be around 5200. Fuel system still stays nice and rich even at 7k. We are debating raising the Rev limit to 7500 to give more headroom for top speed, but haven't decided yet. It will all depend on how much the breathability changes with the upgraded throttle body and C16 power levels.

I might be able to put up a video of street driving. I am really thinking and hoping that my current bottleneck is the stock TB just being to restrictive for the amount of air I can flow especially with a well ported/polished head. It's not like 250hp in a Yaris is anything to bitch about, but with amount of cash that is invested more would be better =D

Please do, we need more inspirational videos like that. How big are you going to go on the TB? 250hp Yaris on street tires? Can't wait to see you blow them away all through second gear lol.
