Yari's system build

Santa (me) got my wife a sound system for her 2008 Yaris sedan and I'm now in the process of installing it.

Of course I need to take care of the lack of sound deadening the car has in its stock form and I'm going with the budget version.

Deadener -Stinger Roadkill Mat on metal to lower resonance.

Decoupler -Ultratouch thermal barrier on top of deadener/metal to decouple the Acoustical Barrier (MLV) and reduce heat transfer (100% coverage) I used aluminum foil tape to seal the seams and to keep the radiant barrier down. I bought the 48 in. x 24 ft. roll @ $59.98 /roll.

MLV - dB-3 Acoustical Barrier MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl). MLV goes on top of radiant barrier. I bought two rolls @$29.99 / roll so I can do the floor as well as the doors.

Armacell’s 2 inch Armaflex closed cell foam tape as another form of decoupler and to help reduce rattles. I bought at least 4 rolls @ $7.85 / each, Rammat Ensolite IUO Peel and Stick @$17 / yrd would have been a better option but I did not want to wait for it to ship. I planned on using as much of the Ultratouch radiant barrier as I could as the decoupler but this tape is good for the small areas.

Extruded Butyl rope where the door skins meet the side impact beams. I had some left over from a projector headlight project I did on my Mark VIII.

I also have a 3, 2 inch thick sound deadening sheets that I've been cutting up and stuffing in any empty spaces I could find including the inner wheel wells (front & rear) and trunk area. I got her a set of SYLVANIA SilverStar Ultras for Christmas so I already had the head lights out and that made it easy to stuff the fender wells and add mat to the fenders themselves.

Considering this is a huge project I had to enlist some helpers as well as a supervisor (Jawa) to keep them focused...

I don't think it's working!

Anyway...

You can see the foam packed in the large open space over the rear wheel.

Interior gutted.

I noticed a plug was out when I pulled the carpet up.

Door speaker wire fishing fun.

Speaker adapters made the job easy.

Outer door skin is covered in the thermal barrier and I added some 2 inch foam on the floors as well. I installed the mat on the "other" side of the inner door panels to make room for the decoupler / MLV layers so the door panels would fit easier.

Pass side door ready for some work... She is driving my modified Focus ST so I need to hurry up on this install!

More to come...

The whole car is pretty much sealed up with the Ultra touch thermal barrier.

This is was left over from the roll of Thermal barrier/absorber/decoupler.

I'm now moving on to creating the bubble with a layer of MLV...

I'm using Oatley Shower pan liner adhesive to seal the seams ($8.98@ Home Depot).

This is one of my "other" projects I got going on...

Relay/power gird from hell plus I added my remote filter hookups to the mix as well.

I have a freaking cave in the back of that car...

Anyway moving on...

MLV sealed up.

Power wire poke through special.

Speaker wires flexloomed and labeled.

All the open spaces have been filled to the brim with acoustical foam.

Yay, the carpet is back in.

I installed the amp on the back of the 60 seat mostly to save time. I will go back and clean up the wire routing and deal with the sub placement and adjust the inputs but everything tests out A-OK.

The entire console is stuffed with foam as well. I have plans for the insides of the dash area.

The system sounds much better than I expected but then again a good install makes a budget system sound like more expensive components and I went in deep on this install.

My wife is very happy.

Wow, that sound deadening job is crazy!

How long did it take you to do the removal of the interior and sound deadening?
What does the foam on top do?
Any troubles putting things back together now that there's about a 1/4 inch of new material?
Any plans to do the roof as well?

  1. How long did it take you to do the removal of the interior and sound deadening?

I build custom cars on the side so the removal of the interior was quick since I'm pretty sure Lego helped built this car.

  2. What does the foam on top do?

Acoustical foam is a wonderful sound absorber. Absorption and blocking are two totally different things but they go hand in hand. Sound reflects off certain surfaces and it’s absorbed by other surfaces, just as white reflects light and black absorbs light.
Recording studios have foam all over the place but that foam is actually not there to block sound from going through the walls (the MLV does the blocking), the foam is there to help reduce echoes. The foam also helps keep the car sounding "dense" and I can attest that the car really has a more solid feel to it.

Acoustical foam or "Baffles" absorb sound reflections and therefore reduce the overall average Reverb Time. You would be surprised how many large gaps there are in such a "small" car like the Yaris.

  3. Any troubles putting things back together now that there's about a 1/4 inch of new material?

Yes, much testing, trimming of panels and patience was required but the end result was well worth it. I'm not afraid to cut stuff up so it wasn't really a big deal... as long as she didn't see me trimming a bunch off the lower back portion of the center consloe.

  4. Any plans to do the roof as well?

Yes, but... I ran out of Acoustical barrier/decoupler and MLV so the roof will be another project for another time.

Adding a layer of foam to the back of the license plate helps to keep it quiet.

One of the most important things I forgot to mention was the fact that I've been told that the heat works much better now that the drafts are gone mostly due to the layer of thermal barrier. My wife has a long highway drive to and from work and she has noticed that the heat is staying in the car. This alone = Winning.

WoW that is one dedicated job you did. I wish I could do that self-installation to my car. Great job. Where did you buy your system from?

As stated before the roof can wait...

PRS80? I needed a cheap Double Din with 3 RCA outputs, pretty lights and BT. I think if I was going high dollar with this system I would have went with Alpine.

Scott, out of curiosity, how much extra weight has this system added? Even an estimate, give or take 5 lbs?

I'd say at least 250 lbs.

2 Rolls of MLV 100lbs.
1 Roll of acoustical barrier 50lbs
1 Bulk box of Stinger road kill dampener 50lbs
4 Rolls of alum tape 10lbs
2+ Sheets of acoustical foam 50lbs
JL Audio amp 7lbs
4 Speakers/wires/power wire 20lbs

At least the head unit is lighter than the stocker!

The end result was worth every pound.
