Trail rated 2008 Yaris hit 300,000 miles today

2008 Yaris made it to 300,000 miles this morning. So far I have put a new water pump, alternator and a used evap canister on it in addition to the standard maintenance stuff. Modifications include:
Custom front air dam and fog light courtesy of raccoon crossing at 55 mph.
Custom rear quarter panel courtesy of deer hit at 50 mph - yes the deer hit me!
Why is it trail rated? It spent the last 12 years having to negotiate 9 miles up and down of the nastiest gravel road in the county with an elevation gain of around 1600 feet. Can't believe I still have the original CV joints. Engine still purrs but I am wondering how long the auto trans will last

I have done all my own maintenance on the car. It has only been to the dealership for the water pump. I have used Castrol GTX and since I commute 180 miles a day I do oil changes monthly or more. The great thing about the Yaris oil change is you can reach everything underneath without jacking it up or putting it on ramps. Now replacing head lights is a real pain! My biggest regret was I did not change the trans fluid early enough. I did a pan change about a hundred thousand miles ago but I am afraid to drain it entirely now. The junk in the fluid maybe the only thing making it work but it still shifts very well with only a little hard shift every now and then. Thinking about doing another pan change soon to put some more good stuff in.

Congratulations. 'Welcome to the club', so to speak . I hit 300,000 miles on my 2007 Yaris in early February of this year. Besides regular maintenance, only the alternator and front wheel bearings had to be replaced. Unfortunately, just shy of 300k, I was behind a large SUV that started a launch into traffic and then abruptly stopped (Age 16 driver who had had his DL for a few weeks)....crunch . My car made it to 300k, but I doubt the safety at highway speeds in the car's current condition. Not worth fixing....wouldn't truly be the same. In one manner or another, I'll donate it before I have to pay the registration again at the end of August 2015.

Great that you've squeezed so many miles out of the transmission . My 2007 Yaris has the original clutch and transmission, but the highest number of miles I've been able to squeeze out of an automatic is about 190,000 on an Acura.

Sorry to hear about your car nookandcrannycar. I have become somewhat attached to mine as I taught both my girls to drive with it. When you clock that many miles on a car you have practically lived in it so it becomes more like your house than a car. I commute from the mountains east of Asheville into Charlotte and as you can imagine I have had my share of close calls. Run off the road by trucks and hit all kind of stuff. The car took a beating from ice storms when I lived up on top of the mountain too so it ain't pretty no more.

I gave my 79 Chevy Silverado Pickup to my brother in law when it had 200k on it. He still has it and its got over 500k on it now. He's a BMW mechanic and when he and his wife take a trip they take the truck. It rides better than any of his half dozen BMWs he says.

Anyway the auto trans oil has NEVER been changed. I don't think you will be having any problem with the tran in your Yaris. Just watch for leaks!

Part of the reason I'm attached to mine is my little cousin's interaction with my blue Yaris. She was 4 when I bought it, and she loved to climb around inside and open and close all the lids. She decorated some plastic eggs, gave them names and biographies, and then had me store them in one of the glove boxes. When she was 7, she liked to sit in the driver's seat and pretend she was driving (in a flat, empty parking lot with me next to her keeping an eye and making sure the car (no keys in it) stayed put. Those were the days. Time flies by too fast. She's 13 now.

I've driven my blue Yaris to all of the lower 48 states, from Niagara Falls, NY to Toronto, and to all four corners of the country (both Lubec and Madawaska in Maine, both Key West and the A1A between Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach in Florida, both Blaine and Cape Flattery in Washington, and in California...the parking lot at Border Field State Park near San Diego, the southwesternmost point that is the farthest west). I drove on many quality roads over the 300k miles, but also some roads with incredibly bad potholes, some gravel roads, and a couple of dirt roads.I spent some time in Asheville and some nearby towns in 2013. Breathtakingly beautiful area....the drive down to SC on the interstate...The Blue Ridge Parkway....etc. . I have yet to make it into Charlotte...except through the airport twice on multi leg flights. I'll make it there eventually. My godson and his family live in Weddington Chase (near Waxhaw).

This post made me think about a 1966 Imperial that a high school friend's step father got past 150k miles without changing the transmission fluid.....or the oil .

Good job, Rutherfordman. My goal for my Yaris is 300,000 miles. Anything after that for me will be gravy. I'm currently at around 43,000 miles....

This sounds alot like mine, not near the same mileage on it though. Used to commute a long distance with a few miles of gravel road at the end. Last summer it got caught in a hailstorm and took a good denting. This past winter it got bumped on the hatch by a lifted 4x4 that left a dent and broke a tail light. Also hit a dog at 100 kph - but I was able to find all the parts and stick everything back to together with zip ties, jb weld and some surprisingly close to colour matching pipeline tape. It kinda looks like FrankenYaris, which may be right because that little car is a monster.

My 2010 Yaris just got to 88,000 miles today! It's certainly no 300,000, but this gives me hope. I have an automatic transmission, and I was wondering when I should change the transmission fluid in it?
