PLEASE DO YOUR OIL CHANGES
A customer came in complaining of his engine burning oil, their was only 60,000 km (about 37000 miles)on his Toyota. Every thing looked fine in tell I looked at the dip stick coated in black, open the valve cover wow what a surprise.
NOT ONCE DID HE CHANGE HIS OIL.! |

They must make something better than they used to. My brother-in-law was so clueless back in the late 80's that he didn't know he was supposed to change the oil in a car and burnt out the engine in his new, red, loaded Trans-Am somewhere around 13-15k miles.

We had a customer once who came in with his new Rav4, with about 38,000 miles on it, not running. They put it in the air and tried to drain the oil and nothing came out. So they dropped the oil pan. They had to scoop the oil out, because it had become a super thick pudding. We put it in a cut off gal jug and stood pencil up in it. The pencil stood up for about 6 months. The customer insisted that he changed the oil a couple times. It still had the oil filter with the orange o-ring on it. LoL. Denied warranty.
Once had a doctor who swore he'd never buy another Toyota after is Celica engine blew up. He we about 70,000 miles without changing the oil, amazingly. People don't realize this is the key to longevity.

anyway, the VVTi engines i think are very prone to sludging. Honda oil changes are still at 10,000km, while Toyotas are at 5,000km. |

A lot of Honda owners report loosing 1/3 to 2/3 oil between oil changes as the car ages (60-75K+ miles), even when you follow all the recommended maintenance. I had to start adding Bars Main Seal Repair additive at every 3-4K oil change on my 2000 Accord around that time to stop the loss. Worked like a charm for many years until I sold it at 200K miles.

sorry i meant here in the manila, and for regular oil. This is (relatively) a very polluted city, so mineral/regular oil when changed at more than 5-7k km tend to show sludges. synthetic oils are changed at 10000km, with a little topup as necessary.

I use 10-40 in the wife's 05 Camry with 133k on it cause if you use 5-30 and drive 5000 miles it ll be down 2 quarts or more.
Not only do you need to CHANGE the oil you need to CHECK it at least twice between changes.

On the opposite side of the sludge spectrum I recently ran across an 08 Yaris with 108K km at a local junkyard that had been in an front end collision. Somebody had already taken the valve cover off and I was very impressed how clean the engine was inside. Usually even in a well maintained engine there is some yellowing of the cast parts from blowby getting pushing up to the top of the engine but that engine looked like it could of rolled of the factory floor a couple months earlier.

Wow what a set of pictures! I guess I'll keep changing it out every 5k! 170k miles and counting. I wonder if it had synthetic or conventional in it. Or if it would matter at that many miles.

Its disturbing how often this still happens. A friend of mine works with a lady who buys brand new elantras...drives them until they make noise and trade them in. Doing absolutely nothing to the car other then putting gas in.
I run amsoil in my yaris with 15,000mile changes and its gorgeous inside. I also do periodically oil sample tests just to be sure.

Solution is simple:
Buy an electric vehicle. No more oil to change.

That's brutal.
When I changed my valve cover gasket at 150k km and checked my valve clearance the cams and everything else looked brand new. Zero staining or buildup of any type. The metal was smooth and shiny with an oil coating on it. Bought the car at 87k km and initially used CT brand (Shell) 5w30 syn oil on 10,000km OCI's and in the past year or two I've been running Mobil1 0w30 on 13,000km OCI's with oil analysis and I'll be pushing that to 15k km this current OCI.
